... At least 13,921 people have died from COVID in Alabama since the start of the pandemic in 2020, more than all Alabamians killed in U.S. military deaths in the World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam conflicts combined. Deaths this year are on pace to surpass 2020 fatalities, a searing milestone when vaccinations sit on shelves around the state, proven safe and effective at preventing most serious COVID-19 illnesses ...

... ZINK: Alaska's really experiencing the worst surge that we've had during the entire pandemic. We've seen unprecedented hospital cases. Approximately 20% of everyone in the hospital right now, or 1 out of 5, are COVID-19 positive. We just have really limited health care capacity in our state. Average Alaskan travels over 150 miles to access care. We're really seeing strain on our health care system like we've never had before with this current surge of cases ...

Arizona schools with no mask mandate are 3½ times more likely to have a COVID-19 outbreak than those without, according to a new CDC report co-authored by Pima County health officials.
New data from Arizona schools shows what public health experts have been telling our governor for months: universal masking keeps students learning in person, said schools chief Kathy Hoffman in a statement. It is irresponsible of the state government to stand in the way of local leaders making decisions that protect the health and safety of their students and staff ...

... Arkansas' hospitals are overrun with unvaccinated covid-19 patients. So if your flu case happens to be dire, it's going to be that much more difficult to get the emergency care you need. And don't expect mercy from hospitals in the states around us, because they're in the same unvaccinated boat.
Covid-19 infection rates are still high, although dropping in Arkansas. And as good as the vaccines are, there are still breakthrough cases. You don't want to put your immune system through the stress of having flu and covid-19 at the same time. Influenza and SARS-CoV-2 want in your lungs in the worst ways ...

Seeking a vaccine mandate for all state prison guards and staff, a federal court-appointed receiver overseeing the medical care of Californias prisons argued Friday that there have been 11 coronavirus-related deaths since August among corrections employees who were not fully vaccinated and outbreaks at 21 prisons.
We do really have a problem of continuing major outbreaks, J. Clark Kelso, the court-appointed receiver, informed U.S. District Court Judge Jon Tigar during a virtual hearing in Oakland. Explaining that the coronavirus has repeatedly spread from staff to the incarcerated, he noted that recently six other states and the federal prison system have mandated vaccines for all prison employees.
Kelso has asked the judge to impose the mandate ...

JOHN DALEY - COLORADO PUBLIC RADIO
... JOHN DALEY, BYLINE: The state Health Department compared coronavirus case rates with vaccination rates among children aged 12 to 17. They became eligible for the vaccine in May. Researchers charted the comparisons for the state's 10 largest counties. They found infection rates were more than twice as high or more in the counties where vaccination rates were lowest compared to the counties in the group where the vaccination rates were highest. State Epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy.
RACHEL HERLIHY: We see this clear correlation between high vaccination rates and low case rates. And that's true not just for the adult population, but also holding true for our children.
DALEY: The state health department also looked at the impact of masks in schools. There's no statewide mask mandate, but nearly 80% of K-12 students in Colorado are in districts requiring masks. Researchers compared coronavirus case rates for 48 Colorado school districts that started school in mid-August. Herlihy says they clearly grew higher in districts not requiring masks versus districts that did ...

A retired Connecticut physician and surgeon had her license suspended Friday by a state medical board for allegedly providing people she had not treated with blank vaccine, mask-wearing and other exemption forms, so long as they sent her a self-addressed stamped envelope in the mail requesting the paperwork.
The state Department of Public Health said it received an anonymous tip in July about Dr. Sue Mcintosh of Durham sending people fraudulent exemption forms. After an investigation, DPH called on the Connecticut Medical Examining Board to hold Fridays emergency hearing and summarily suspend the doctor, saying she poses a clear and immediate danger to public health and safety.
The panel voted unanimously in favor of the suspension. A full hearing on the merits of the case is scheduled for Oct. 5.

... The Florida Department of Health announced in June that it would no longer release daily COVID-19 data. Instead, it is now releasing a weekly report every Friday but it withholds information that was publicly available before.
As of June 4, the state no longer reports non-resident vaccinations, coronavirus cases and fatalities. The state has declined repeated requests to provide non-resident data to the Tampa Bay Times.
Florida is the only state that updates its coronavirus caseloads and data once per week. Although weekly reports can be more reliable than daily updates, experts warn that infrequent data updates may delay the identification of emerging trends ...

(118,224 posts)Staffing shortages affecting Idaho hospitals have been exacerbated during the pandemic, but experts contend requirements mandating the COVID-19 vaccine for healthcare workers are not the root cause of the situation, the Standard Journal reported Sept. 23.
The experts, instead, point to a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations and other factors.
"The staff shortage is not a result of vaccine requirements at some hospitals," Dave Jeppesen, director of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, said in a Sept. 14 news conference, according to the Standard Journal. "... The staffing shortage in Idaho has been long-standing. What has changed is a massive increase in COVID-19 patients needing hospital care."
Toni Lawson, vice president of government relations for the Idaho Hospital Association, made similar comments in the newspaper report, citing high COVID-19 hospitalizations, high regular hospitalizations and frequent staffing challenges ...

TROY, Ill. (AP) A group of parents is suing a southwest Illinois school district over its mask mandate, asking a judge to allow their children to attend school without a mask.
An attorney filed the suit on behalf of three parents who have nine children enrolled in Triad Community Unit School District 2, which imposed a mask mandate after Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a coronavirus executive order over the summer requiring universal masking in Illinois schools.
The parents' lawsuit asks a Madison County judge to approve temporary restraining orders that would allow their children to attend school without a mask, at least in the short term.
Their attorney, Tom DeVore, argues in the complaint that Illinois county health departments have the right to issue quarantine orders, but school districts do not. He also argues there is no health regulation to require asymptomatic students to wear masks ...
