Luis Sánchez worked overtime to rescue Governor Gavin Newsom in Californias recall race. His group PowerCA Action reached more than a quarter-million voters ahead of election day, encouraging young Latino Californians to head to the polls.
Its not that he is particularly invested in Newsoms career.
For us the recall was never about saving Gavin Newsoms political future, said Sánchez, the executive director of PowerCA action, which focused its efforts in the states agricultural Central Valley. It was about ensuring that this state didnt move backward to when the state and the administration were much more xenophobic.
Newsom, a Democrat, last week handily defeated the Republican-led effort to remove him from office in a rare gubernatorial recall. In an election that depended on turnout, its clear that the Latino vote has played a decisive role in the results, experts say.

(26,403 posts)Will a given vote maximize the advancement of progressive ideals, or will it move things backward? It keeps me from going all "Green Party (US)" in my spite.

(21,137 posts)I worked with some young Hispanic movers and one mentioned the recall and asked me what I thought of Larry Elder. I told him Elder was against birthright citizen and on his show wanted to abolish the 14th amendment. The teacher in me explained, it means even if your kids were born here they will not be considered Americans. He blinked and asked to tell him more. We were on a job moving someone in and as we worked I told him more. Later I heard him tell his co workers in Spanish what I said. My Spanish is not great but I know enough to figure some out.
