Yes, you read that right. It's actually more complicated than that, but these subject lines don't allow enough characters to spell it out more fully.
What happened was, an actual, real live teacher's aide in Oregon created a major kerfuffle by showing up at school in blackface one day. Her excuse? Being unvaccinated for covid, she was told to practice social distancing while in the classroom, and her tiny white brain reached the conclusion she was experiencing segregation. Yes, I KNOW it doesn't make any sense. But here's a video where she tries to explain herself, and the multiple layers of epic stupidity are a wonder to behold.

So, this woman thinks that being required to keep her distance from vulnerable children due to being an unvaccinated plague rat is exactly the same thing as Rosa Parks being told to give up her seat on the bus to a white person. Also, she is evidently completely unaware of the offensiveness of a white person wearing blackface. And that is on top of being a vaccine refuser, which presumably means she is also a Trump worshipping conspiracy nut. Like I said, multiple layers of stupidity. And that's not even counting the school administration's stupid policy of allowing unvaccinated staff in classrooms with kids who are too young to be vaccinated.

(64,854 posts)Even if aides are union, as in Illinois, they would have no allies in a case like this dismissal.
And, they could live for 2/3rds of a semester without an aide, so she's probably close to being a luxury. (Unless it's special ed.)
She was already a dispensable employee & she made herself disposable.
Idiotic!

(146,255 posts)Aside from that, she is clearly too stupid to be employed in a school in the first place.

(13,168 posts)It ruins the public school system to insist on making it about anything but education. Two flags are plenty. Teach other flags and viewpoints in appropriate civics, history, media, and political science courses. Teachers should teach common values of fairness, honesty, respect, and critical thinking; don't get me wrong. But those things should all be taught as universal virtues.
We're losing something very valuable: Responsible authority. Schools, school boards, any authorities, now have to kowtow to 24x7 mob rule by social media. It has to stop. The teacher's aide in question would not have made her dumb statement if she didn't think she could simply tell her bosses at the school to buzz off...the Trumpies would protect her. In a well run school, the Principal would be able to see her walk into the building in black face, walk up to her, and simply order her to remove it.

(64,854 posts)In Oregon (as in Illinois) one needs only the equivalent of 4 semesters college credit. Don't even need an Associate's degree, just 60 hours of accumulated credits.
She could have gone to a couple different schools over time, never finished anything & still gotten teaching assistant certification.
But, I do get your point. She obviously learned little in her 4 semesters.

I was just clarifying that she didn't have to have a degree to get that job.

(64,854 posts)But, I know the rules in Illinois because my wife was an in-classroom social worker/coteacher for special ed, and I got a sub license after I retired.
Out of curiosity, I looked up those of Oregon, and they match Illinois.
I'd be unsurprised if some states have softer requirements.

(13,909 posts)requires an associates degree to be a teachers aide. This recent associates degree requirement really helped change the classroom for the better. I wish they would do something similar regarding substitutes.

(64,854 posts)People with an associates already licensed were grandfathered in, but all new subs need to have a bachelor's degree or higher. When I say new, I mean 10 or more years ago.
And, AA holders can't work more than 30 days (I think) in one district per semester. So, that can't take assignments like 8 week maternity leave.
Somebody like me has no such restrictions, except from the union rules. Nobody can work as a sub more that 120 days in one district. If they need that, they should hire a new full time position.
For me, it doesn't matter because I only do grades 6-12, and only math & science. So, I work in 15 different schools. And, as a retiree, I'm not working 120 days a year anyway.

(10,823 posts)Also known as a poor excuse for egregious behavior. And no, sorry, I do not believe this woman was unaware of the symbolism, the offensive nature of wearing blackface in 2021.
As is the case for the majority of the antivaxx crowd: They. Just. Don't. Care. Because they believe freedom = Doing Whatever I Want while insisting their view, their behavior is protected under the First Amendment.
So the ultimate message? Screw you!
This is the skewed viewpoint of defiant children who don't know any better bc they're children. It is unacceptable in adults particularly for adults in our schools.
This woman deserves to be fired, permanently, from ever working with children of any age.
Disgraceful and devious postering of the worst kind.
