Also, well done to Pramila Jayapal for being so resolute and holding her caucus together.

(31,688 posts)Gottheimer's district is similar to mine (Malinowski) and Sherrill. Since they are purple Districts and the stakes are higher - the Constituents have a few demands. Those seats turn back Red in 2022 if they aren't met.
Jayapal and her Caucus are safe bright blue. There is a lot less risk for them.

(22,911 posts)Most so called deficit haws were Republicans, until it was Trump blowing up the national debt, then they no longer gave a damn. It is Gottheimer and his ilk who constantly emphasize "cost" without a focus on the programs that funding will pay for. They are very popular measures. Not only that, unlike the Republican givaway to the rich, these programs are paid for in the bill by increased revenue, and the public approves of how that revenue will be raised (by making the super wealthy pay their fair share etc.)
It's like they are saying "who wants to write a $50,000 check?" without acknowledging that that $50,000 check provides the down payment for a home a that family has long been seeking, or that the family won't be the ones writing that check in return for getting that home.
They are being disingenuous at best. Plenty of other House moderates in non safe districts are ready and willing to sell the benefits of President Biden's policies to their constituents.

Sherrill, New Jersey Congressional Delegation Continue Their Fight to Repeal the Cap on SALT Deduction, Oppose Reconciliation Unless SALT Deduction Restored
Representatives Mikie Sherrill, Josh Gottheimer, Bill Pascrell, and Tom Malinowski held a press conference today in Englewood, NJ to reiterate their steadfast commitment to repealing the SALT deduction cap, opposition to any reconciliation package that does not include SALT
Englewood, NJ Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) joined colleagues from the New Jersey congressional delegation Representatives Bill Pascrell, Jr. (NJ-9), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5), and Tom Malinowski (NJ-7) for a press conference as part of their advocacy for a full repeal of the unfair cap on the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction in the upcoming budget reconciliation package. They made clear they will vote no on reconciliation unless the SALT deduction is fully restored. Repealing the cap on the SALT deduction would keep more dollars in the pockets of hardworking New Jersey families, teachers, first responders, and seniors.
Before the SALT deduction was capped in the disastrous 2017 Republican tax bill, 54 percent of NJ-11 families took the deduction.
The four Members were joined in Englewood today by homeowners who have been negatively impacted by the cap on the SALT deduction.
Im proud to stand alongside my colleagues today and make it clear that were fighting for SALT relief for New Jersey families, said Rep. Mikie Sherrill. This is an issue that impacts teachers, firefighters, first responders, and families in my district. Since my first day in office, it has been a top priority of mine to repeal the SALT deduction cap and provide the relief from this double taxation that families across my district need. After years of fighting that fight, we finally have an opportunity to deliver. Repealing the SALT deduction cap is a must-do and it is clear that theres no pathway forward on the Build Back Better Act without it.
Despite Republicans lies, SALT is all about the middle class, said Rep. Pascrell. But what is middle class and middle income in Oklahoma or South Dakota or Wyoming isnt the same in New Jersey where we face much higher costs of living. Paraphrasing Rodney Dangerfield, New Jersey gets no respect with these SALT lies. There is no Build Back Better and no rebuilt America without a restored SALT deduction. Any legislation we approve in the full House must include it. Period.
If we reinstate the SALT deduction, nearly a third of New Jersey residents almost three million people would get tax relief, said Rep. Gottheimer. Thats why were calling for action, and working in Congress, to ensure the SALT deduction is reinstated. We will only vote for a reconciliation package on the house floor that reinstates SALT. This is about getting more money back into the pockets of Jerseys middle class families and stopping double taxation that only benefits Moocher states which is why we are standing firm. No SALT, no dice.
Any budget reconciliation bill that is going to raise the top individual tax rate for my constituents must also address the SALT deduction, said Rep. Malinowski. This legislation is an incredible opportunity to restore tax fairness for states like New Jersey, and I stand with my colleagues in demanding real relief for middle-class Americans.
The only safe seat is Pascrell's.
Deliberately leaving that traitor van drew off this list:

New Jersey's 3rd: Democratic newcomer Andy Kim defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur.
New Jersey's 7th: Democrat Tom Malinowski ousted incumbent Republican Leonard Lance.
New Jersey's 11th: Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the race for the open seat against Republican Jay Webber.
If the Progress Caucus gives an inch or two - they will still be elected. Lifting the SALT CAP was a promise made by my Congressman (Malinowski), Sherrill, Kim, and Pascrell.
Let's be clear - they GOP changed the tax code to benefit upper middle class in West Virginia ($110K) and higher (lower property taxes, underfunded education and in state social services, lower state income taxes) and shifted the burden to a truly middle class family in NJ making the same amount - but living in an extremely modest home paying 9K a year in property taxes - add in their state income taxes . . .
And well if we don't lift the SALT cap - as a 'payer' state getting little back from Fed Gov - I want Malinowski asking -
Where is our money going? My constituents want answers? They want to know why WV, and Arkansas and Mississippi, and Florida can't pay their fair share. All they have to do is increase their property taxes and state income taxes and more money can go green infrascture and human infrastructure.
Tom Rinaldo
(22,911 posts)It is an important, but very specific, point to be negotiated, which certainly appears to be a good faith concern held by those who want it lifted. Which is an important distinction to make compared to those whose beef seemingly consists mostly of a complaint that "the price tag is too high" or that we are not being nice enough to fossil fuel giants during a Code Red Climate Crisis, or that the top 1% and large corporations can't afford to pay higher rates on their taxes, or that we should "wait a year" or whatever.
JustAnotherGen
(31,688 posts)The price tag need to be justified if the SALT cap is not being lifted in either of these bills.
The NJ delegation has to deal with constituents who are middle class in NJ (not the top 10%, 5% or 1%) who are paying double property taxes as a result of the tax scam the GOP/Trump implemented a few years ago.
More so than Manchin - the NJ Reps have a right to demand transparency. Manchin's state is a 'taker' - and we are a 'payer'.
Add in my Global Trade Compliance for a Made in New Jersey Manufacturer reliant on chips, network cards, etc. etc. from outside of the USA - we don't have them being made in the USA.
So - where did all of the 301 (China) tariff money go? Where is it. My company's tax bill jump from just about $2 Million a year to just about $98 million a year. Where is that money - so that the middle class in my state can get their SALT cap back?

(19,908 posts)very popular with their own constituents, with the majority of constituents. Lower prescription drug costs is a Democrat and Republican voter united wish, as well as child care subsidies, and the expansion of Medicare to include dental, hearing and vision benefits. There's more to what these particular group are up to, in trying to stop this bill.
And as I said before, Katie Porter is in a red district and has no problem defending this bill.
JustAnotherGen
(31,688 posts)Fire Fighters, Police Officers, Teachers, EMT's, etc. etc.
It's 1/3 of the people here - and probably 70% of Malinowskis district.
Good for Katie Porter - but she isn't in New Jersey or in Hunterdon County. If she doesn't get with lifting the SALT Cap - bye bye to her next year.
Where are the China Tariff dollars? Where has the extra 9K I've been sending to D.C. gone the past three years? Why can't we fix the roads out of the port of Elizabeth (imports/exports) - NJ is on the hook for those side roads.
I want a full accounting of every single cent taken off the kitchen tables of teachers in NJ and handed over to Lawyers in Mississippi and Wyoming.

And the press going on and on that 8 months into his Presidency Joe Biden's legacy is at stake is ridiculous. It's not, this is not do or die, he's already accomplished much and will have other chances to get big things done.
