Who wouldnt want to glamp in a van with no shower or toilet?
One van was reportedly advertised as a city glamping experience for just under $100 a night.

(24,554 posts)My son was graduating and we're cheap. It was a nice place. Not fancy, but new enough, it was built in 2009. It was clean and everything.
My daughter roughed it and stayed at my son's apartment. That place was like 300 sq ft and had three guys staying there. She was kinda miserable.

Just checked the Super 8 site and the rate for next weekend is only $129.

(4,664 posts)a huge 1 br apt (guessing ~1k sq ft) with high ceilings, long hallway, brick walls, fabulous place near Lincoln Center from 1973-78. Based on inflation calculator, today that $315 would represent $1940 (1973) to $1321 (1978). Sure did feel expensive then!

(24,554 posts)I think rent for all three was about 1500 a month. It was near a housing project near Pratt University. It was on top of a garage. One night, there was a fire in the garage. Fortunately, there was only smoke damage to the apartment. Even the door going up to the place was weird. The hall and steps were super narrow. My son had foot surgery and we had to send him up there all damaged, so what he did was rode up and down the steps on his butt for 6 weeks. Crazy!

Hasidic families own all the rentals in this area.

(4,448 posts)That's seem like extreme government overreach right there.
Are they confiscating those vans down at the Hertz and Avvis lots to?
I hear people sometimes camp in those.

(20,132 posts)Im pretty sure that Hertz and Avis keep their vans registrations up to date and also dont rent them out as illegal hotels.

(4,448 posts)That's pretty easy to fix.
But good lord that's dumb. I'm surprised they were able to stay on the street for 2 years. They should have just registered them in an in-expensive state and called it a day. Some states you can get a tag for less than $100 a year.
as far as "illegal hotel". Well I suppose if that's the way NYC wrote the law.
But I see rolling hotels everyday. Outside NYC we call them RVs. You can rent them and park them pretty much anywhere for awhile.
