It's been 563 days since we've been about 90% locked down here.
My wife and I went to the same stylist before the pandemic.
Now, I cut my own hair in the mirror, and my wife finishes my neck line.
I do the full job on my wife's hair. I call her the hair throng. I wish I had her hair. It's unusually thick, and she has a ton of it. I bought thinning shears, regular barber shears, hair clips, spray bottles to keep it wet while I'm cutting it, and one of those capes that the barber puts on you to catch the hair. Then I watched a ton of YouTube videos on how to cut hair. It comes out pretty good...I'd say about 80% as good as the stylist. She says she will never go to a stylist again if I continue to cut her hair.
I have only seen a dentist once during the pandemic, and that was early on, just to get a tooth pulled. So I'm meticulous in cleaning my teeth. I won't explain all the shit that I do, but it takes me 25 minutes every time I brush my teeth. Well, actually, 25 minutes one time per day, then maybe another 5 minutes for a quick second brush.
So how are you people handling your hair and teeth?
Obligatory line from The Jerky Boys: "Pablo honey? You keeping yourself clean, Pablo? You washing your ass?" (Some people here will understand the refererence, I'm sure).

(8,387 posts)If you would have told me two years ago that I'd be cutting my own hair, I would have thought you were crazy.
An electric clipper and a couple of Youtube videos later, I don't think I'll ever pay for a haircut again.

(4,554 posts)spilled a lot of paint on my hair. Rather than try to wash it off with paint thinner, I opted to simply cut it all off and go bald for a while. While it was growing back I discovered how much I liked it v short so tried a similar device to the one you use.
Never been to a barber since....

(20,868 posts)One time I had my hair cut at a local shop. It was a rip-off for $50.00 and no masks!
Second time around I went to the local beauty college and that was $10.00 and I gave the lady a $10.00 tip.
As for teeth, finally got into see a dentist.
I didn't even need to have my teeth cleaned after 2 years of no cleanings.
No other problems detected.
I do have a fine set I choppers I must admit!
At least I have one thing going for me!

My hair hadnt been that short since I was born, but she did a brilliant cut and I went to her salon after being vaxxed a few months ago for another cut. Shes meticulous about masking protocols and I felt very safe. Going back soon for another cut, but if there is a new strain and outbreak, theres always the driveway.

I have gone to the dentist for teeth cleanings and a hair salon for cuts after a little over a year into the pandemic. People around here are generally very good about getting vaccinated, masking and social distancing, so I haven't had any problems.

(42,307 posts)who has a shop in a suite of single-person hair salons - IOW, she's a one-person, one room show.
When she re-opened last year after the shutdown, the main door to the group waiting area was locked. Only the stylists could let clients in and out. She added extra time between appts for sanitizing and masking was required.
I felt comfortable going to her. She relaxed the masking rules over the summer but has recently required them again. She's lost several long-time customers because of it but she doesn't care. She has young children and an immunocompromised father. And, she's gained several new customers (via our local Facebook liberal group).
IMO, she has done a good job of straddling the line between keeping her small business going and keeping herself and her clients safe.
As far as the dentist goes, I had put everything off and then, in July 2020, I had a tooth go bad. I've never felt pain like that. Took nearly a week and several dentist and endodontist visits (and a $2000, 20 minute ER visit for pain meds), but I got the sucker extracted. I've gone back for a cleaning since.

(7,722 posts)now she and the rest of the beauticians wear them, customers optional, but most do wear masks. She also limits the number of people in the salon. I keep my mask on at all times. My dentist is following all Pennsylvania rules, masks required until it's time to do the dental work, then obviously patient takes it off. He has some kind of state of the art air filter/purifiers in every room. Both are Republicans, btw...

(12,422 posts)Seeing the dentist every six months.
At the hair cutter's, I'm usually the only customer there at that time, along with the hair cutter and the receptionist, both now vaccinated.
At the dentist's, I have to wait in my car till they call me so I'm not there with other patients. The whole staff is now vaccinated. My teeth have never been cleaner because I've been working from home since March, 2020, so I take my time cleaning them.
I've also taken my cat to the vet twice as he was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.
All three places have good social distancing and masking policies so they don't worry me.

(4,112 posts)I'd had a chin-length bob, with last cut just about three weeks before the March 2020 lockdown. It's now just below my shoulder blades. Fortunate to have my dad's genes there - no gray at 61 and thick, shiny, healthy hair. It's a lot of work, especially drying it, but I'm enjoying it for now.
Hubby has had several cuts, but his barber only has one person at a time in the shop and enforces masks for everyone.
Dental cleaning - also had one just a couple of weeks before lockdown so I'm a little overdue. I keep meaning to schedule that...

(1,477 posts)Since COVID Ive had to wait in the car at both places until called and everyone was masked. At an appointment last week, I called from my car and was told to come in. There were quite a few people in the small waiting room with the employees and me being the only ones masked. If I hadnt been called in within a few minutes, I would have asked to stay in my car.
At my hair place theyve also relaxed the mask rules, but my beautician wears a mask.

(2,334 posts)I spend time first with a dental pick then flossing then debriding (half hydrogen peroxide and half crest 3d white) then brushing, lots of brushing. Upper pallet, gums, under the tongue, backbrush the tongue. Every night then a quick brush in the morning shower cuz why not?
A relative who was annoyed by the whole thing (they could hear the process, sorry) asked me why? I said "You know how you wake up in the morning and your breath is like UGH and all you want to do is squish with some mouthwash"? Yeah. "I don't have that. When I wake up in the morning my breath is as fresh as a daisy. That's why". He now does the same thing. What a difference.
As for my head, I just shave it.

(50,269 posts)thing was an anti-vaxxer and I spent the better part of 45 minutes explaining to her why the vaccine was safe and how deadly Covid was. I imagine she still hasn't been vaccinated. At least she wore a mask. Guess my husband is going to be on the hook to help me with the next trim. I can do the sides and front okay, but need help cutting a straight line in the back (classic Anna Wintour-like bob). As for dentists, everyone who works at the dentist's office has been vaccinated and they take super precautions so I feel totally safe going there.

(34,136 posts)But it is nearly down to my waist again, so "cutting" it is more trimming off the split ends and evening it up.
As for the dentist, I put off replacing a temporary crown for almost a year, but finally went in and got the permanent one on. A week or so ago I posted a message from my dentist about how they shut down since the spouse of one of their people had been exposed to Covid (https://www.democraticunderground.com/100215850034), so I know their office is taking every precaution. Their hygienists wear masks and face shields and everyone in the office is vaccinated. I feel safe going there. In fact, right now my husband is getting his teeth cleaned there.

(8,052 posts)they sell in stores, or you can buy them separately too. I've been trimming my own hair and bangs for ages with the real haircut scissors, and you will have cleaner cuts and less-damaged ends.

(34,136 posts)I'm not going to invest in specialized scissors now. I need to spend that money on embroidery scissors!
Right now I'm not even trimming my hair. It's finally made it almost back to its full length. Around 2017/18 it got almost up to my shoulders. I'm not sure if it was the bad heart valve and poor circulation or the kidney cancer that caused it to not grow much, but now my health is a lot better and it has been growing like old times.
My plan is die with very long hair, I don't care if it goes white - which it probably won't since my mother died at 97 with mostly brown hair.

(1,823 posts)As for dentists, I typically only do one cleaning a year, that hasnt changed. I also had a dental emergency when I lost a crown, so that entailed all the normal visits and follow ups. My dentist office requires masks in the waiting room, and of course the hygienist and dentist wear them. Im vaxxed as well, no clue if they are but I did not feel unsafe. To be honest, I cant think of anything I was doing before that I dont do now except concerts. Massive crowds still skeeve me out, but Im good otherwise.

(12,132 posts)wait, i did get some split ends trimmed off in about 2001...but no real shortening except that what nature so lovingly calls "male pattern baldness". Also known as "The Larry" (Shouldn't be too long before I'm a full blown Larry. I'm keeping the pony-tail until mother nature pries it from my cold dead follicles).
I just had a deep cleaning and new bridge put in this last month. My dentist requires masks until they have to actually go in and all his people are masked full time. they take temps and will send you home if you score too high or won't wear a mask.

When salon's were closed here, my stylist came to my house and we did the hair cut outside on the patio. Longest I went without a haircut was about 2 months. I was miserable.

But seriously. I just go. The hair cutter lady (I cannot think of the word for that) just pulls the loops away from my ears one at a time when she cleans up around them.
Just went for teeth cleaning last week. He and the hygienist wore masks as they did their thing. I wore mine whenever active work wasn't being done.
I mean, stuff has to be done. Just gotta get on with it and be careful as one can.

(1,379 posts)I got vaccinated, like I was supposed to, and I decided that I wont live in fear anymore.
Im 52, in relatively good health, and although I wont put myself in obvious danger, I plan to live life as close to normal as possible.
According to the science, Im not 100% safe from dying of Covid, but Im pretty close. I am in more danger driving my car, or riding my bike on the city street.
I will continue to follow local laws, and shop owners requests (I was asked for my vaccination card in Seattle last week), but otherwise life as normal as possible.

(34,069 posts)going to a dentist for cleanings.
Ironically, I've had more haircuts since the pandemic started than in the previous decade.
My hair was hip-length at the beginning of the pandemic. Then I had sarcoma on my right arm; removing it required a skin graft, and no one in my family was willing to wash my hair for the 35 days while the two successive grafts were healing. So I got a pixie haircut (and have had 3 cuts since then). My daughter's high school buddy cuts it (in her salon). She's vaccinated, but doesn't always wear a mask for her other customers (she does for me). She was exposed recently, knows how careful I am, called and cancelled our appointment until she was past the window in which she might have gotten infected and had tested negative several times. (I hope she has learned her lesson and will wear her mask for all customers - since she lost several customers for the 10-day period.
I also, unfortunately, had a root canal I needed in the middle of all of this. It got delayed - and I almost lost the tooth because of it, then snapped off another tooth.
So about half of my time unmasked in the presence of people outside of my house in the past 18 months has been for root canal (2), crown (4), dental cleanings (2), and cancer surgery (when they took my mask off during surgery).
I am extremely cautious - but I'm not being a hermit. I'm taking care of health needs and, to the extent possible, minimizing mask removal to do it.

(30,540 posts)and two fillings, I hadn't been for a year and a half. The dentist insisted on doing a deep cleaning instead of a regular cleaning. The deep cleaning along with the two fillings was over $1,500 (I can't remember the exact cost it was so much I must have blanked it out)! Don't neglect your teeth, it will cost you big bucks if you do.
As far as hair I have long hair and I trim my own bangs, I always have. I had to stop coloring my hair three years ago when I had an allergic reaction to the hair dye.

As for teeth. I've been fortunate to have a good strong set of teeth. 80 yrs and 2 cavities in my lifetime. No other issues. I always was an only "go to the dentist if something hurts" kind of person. And like anything I drag to a medical doc, it has to hurt either very bad, or nag at me consistently for at least a week.
Edit to add, it isn't because of covid, I'm just cheap.

(32,701 posts)I'm willing to take more risks to get things done. I get my hair done every 7 weeks or so and I've been to the dentist several times. I've flown out of state. I've even had two elective procedures this year.
The things that really give me pause are things like eating out, getting an oil change or anything where someone is in my car for 30 minutes or more. I don't like to have my food or personal space invaded by potential covid carriers.
