A coworker is retiring

They aren’t quite retirement age, but they are choosing to refer to themselves as retiring. They don’t want to get the vaccine, and they are required to as a term of ongoing employment.

So… they’re giving up a good paying job, excellent health benefits and a very good retirement because they think Covid is a government conspiracy (seriously- they believe that!)

It’s all so astounding.

I suppose it’s one way to open up jobs though. Our employer will not budge on the mandate.

Soon, they're just working on the details for different sites, but management told us today they're going to follow the Presidential Order.

I expect there to be people who quit over it. Just not very smart.

Or go into consulting. I work for a large engineering firm, and yes, even engineers have anti vaxxers among the ranks. It's crazy.

Good riddance to all of those who decide to quit or take early retirement. We don't want you around anyway.

The coworker is BIPOC (correct me if I’m using that term wrong) so I can kind of understand a general reluctance to trusting the government.

But they work for government. In a health related field. So yeah. Not making sense.

Everything from Bill Gates and a billionaire conspiracy to use the virus and vaccine to reduce the global population, to international communism using it to break the capitalist world economy, to our government using it as an excuse to seize more power and take away freedoms.

The Boogeyman changes, the paranoia is the only constant

I’ve had many conversations with them over the years so on one hand I’m sorry to see them go. On the other hand it’d be pretty hard to do their job if they don’t believe in the mandate.

It’ll open up a job with good pay and excellent benefits.

8. Theoretically workers can "retire" at any age

Some married people might have a spouse whose income is enough to support both. Some people have investments or assets that were inherited from parents, and they can get by without the regular paycheck.

(For most people) they won't be collecting Social Security until they reach 66, but for some that may not be a problem.

Although they aren’t married and have always lived in the edge. From my point of view, it’s a foolish financial decision but I know that isn’t what is driving them to retire.

They’ll slip further down the economic chain, after achieving some stability when they took this job a decade ago.

People like your coworker in terms of belief. Especially if they are over 55. They will "retire" from the current career and likely step into a smaller business where they will make less money and have no benefits, but work with the like-minded. Their call.
