https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/09/27/brady-mistic-idaho-springs-lawsuit-police-arrest/When police in Idaho Springs, Colo., saw a vehicle roll through a stop sign on a September evening in 2019, they followed it into a laundromats parking lot and turned on their flashing lights.
The driver, Brady Mistic, parked his car and stepped out of the vehicle.
He later said he did not understand what was happening, or even that he was being pulled over Mistic is deaf and communicates primarily through American Sign Language.
In the confusion, the situation escalated. According to a new lawsuit filed by Mistic, the officers threw him to the ground, stunned him with a Taser and put him in handcuffs. He tried to use some of the words he is able to speak: No ears. It seemed to make no difference.
After the encounter, Mistic was charged with resisting arrest and assault on a police officer. He was jailed for four months, during which time he said he continued to struggle to communicate the misunderstanding. The charges were later dropped.
*snip*
No doubt this will be dismissed because of qualified immunity.

This is a civil rights action seeking justice for the shocking use of unnecessary police force and wrongful incarceration of a deaf man whom the Defendant officers rashly attacked after failing to recognize his disability and misinterpreting his non-threatening attempts to see and communicate as challenges to police authority, the lawsuit states.

By the way these are the same officers involved in the tazing of 75 year old Michael Clark.
I wonder how many other lives these two chuckleheads have damaged or ruined?

(1,160 posts)I will avoid any police officer if possible. Nasty, armed people. I have a whole lot less respect for the police than that fellow who recounted his story.

(17,862 posts)In addition to the unjustified tasering, the two cops also planted a weapon near the old man after carrying him into the hallway to support their narrative that he came at them with the weapon. That doesn't get mentioned enough. The old man was additionally harmed w/the carry.
She should also have been charged. If the police department had done their job after this incident, then the old man would also not have been harmed.

(37,748 posts)And I'm quite certain some simpleton in a MAGA cap (metaphorically, if not literally) will justify this incident with the "how are cops supposed to know....?" excuse.
Same as it ever was.

(1,160 posts)Cannot trust any of them. I never understood the false love the MAGA people have for police. It's like they are their personal attack dogs.
