(3,396 posts)If there aren't, then some un vaccinated people in the ICU might die of covid, and free up some beds for other emergency's.
Looks like a "win, win" choice to me.

(5,586 posts)They literally walked past signs that said "Heros Work Here" on a daily basis.
While I think they should be vaccinated; they have been putting their lives on the line for ours, in perhaps the most difficult working conditions possible.
They've certainly contributed more than I have, since all I did was social distance, wear a mask, and get a jab. They have literally saved lives.

(8,976 posts)if they would rather lose their jobs than get a vaccination, what kind of advice are they giving people?

(113,301 posts)I heard that same line from a friend's sister-in-law, who is a nurse at the biggest health care system in their county. She is a trumphumper, a qanon believer, and, unsurprisingly, an anti-mask, anti-vax loon. If she walks out, she will lose her job, the health care for both she and her husband (both with very expensive health issues), and her husband's family farm. And they are not quite retirement age. It will be interesting. I would not want her anywhere near me.

(58,785 posts)be vaccinated when it became available, have always been endangering lives. And unlike some others who manage to do morbidly stupid well enough, they can't fool anyone that they haven't always known it.

Hopefully she will get the "poison" put in her and keep her job too. We need as many nurses as we can get.

(37,748 posts)And in regards to your last assertion, I don't think the nurse who saved three lives is any more, nor any less, 'heroic' than the nurse who saved 33 lives.

(4,168 posts)There is no one, static response. Vaccines are the latest, possibly the most critical, weapon against the virus. Given the virulence and highly contagious nature of Delta and the rising mortality numbers that results, it's no longer enough to just suit up in PPE. Medical workers need to protect themselves and their patients, as well as the community, by getting vaccinated.
Any HCWs who refuse vaccination are failing at their job, not to mention putting their lives and the lives of other at risk. They need to find another line of work.

(21,447 posts)home to family, or vice versa, into work to their patients. That was hard to avoid before vaccines, although they did their best through use of PPE, hand-washing, and sanitization of equipment and environment.
But now there is no excuse for not being vaccinated. Now, if not vaccinated, they create an unnecessary risk to patients, family, and community.

(12,165 posts)making the choice to be virus vectors. There was a study about this I read about yesterday.
Maybe the unvaxxed are not cut out for medical work. I wasnt able to do my job a few years ago because of circumstances out of my control. I have no sympathy for these healthcare workers because they do have a choice, but their ideology trumps the idea of doing no harm.

(12,165 posts)So, youre wrong. Their role is unlike others.
What is your point, exactly? That there should be people that are special enough to not get the vaccine because they dont give a damn?

Years ago I learned of a nurse in a newborn center, go from baby to baby without washing her hands. Ten newborns total.
Within 24 hours all ten had contracted a serious infection of some sort from the nurse and it sent the newborn infant center into an all out scramble to try and save them.

(11,458 posts)This makes me happy, there are more of us vaccinated than not and its about time the unvaccinated pay for their stupidity.
There is the rare exception of folks who really can't get shot but that is 1% of those that don't.

(21,447 posts)has lost around 10% of its employees who refused the vax, according to the director of the chain, who supports the mandate. This director said that she anticipated this and has been planning on how to deal with it. No details, though, on what she is doing.
Meantime, 2 NY Republican state senators have written a bill to remove the requirement for pre-school children, ages 2 to 4, to wear masks. Think I will e-mail them to ask what they have against toddlers that they are willing to put them at risk.

(26 posts)Generally speaking if you refuse the vaccine mandate, you are not qualified for unemployment, barring a few exceptions.. You have to lose your job through no fault of your own..but there are certain "unique" situations I have read..
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/new-york-health-care-workers-who-are-fired-for-refusing-to-be-vaccinated-wont-be-eligible-for-unemployment-benefits-in-most-cases-11632780792
So today in Buffalo, some hospitals employees showed up for vaccines, but kind of late since the deadline was the 27th..According to the mandate they are still out of employment. I hope the hospitals stick to it and not cave..The religious exemption has been put on pause by the courts, a pending decision by Oct 12..
