(26,366 posts)Republicans want the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling on their own, so they can say "See, Democrats are saddling the US with trillions in debt", and Democrats want Republicans to join them in raising the debt ceiling so they can say "it's good to see Republicans doing the right thing and taking responsibility for the debt they incurred".

(21,323 posts)she then would not be able to use that for president Biden's 3.5 trillion dollar Build Back Better.
Another reason for not using reconciliation is that Democrats would have to set a concrete dollar amount.
Bring it up for a clean vote but make GQPers stand on the Senate floor and actually filibuster. Make them explain why Social Security checks won't go out, make them explain why our active military won't get paid, and televise it.
Better yet, this is my choice, eliminate the filibuster and make Manchin and Sinema explain why they are against it. This is a perfect case where Manchin can't use the excuse that he wants to be bipartisan, every GQPer voted against funding the government.

(17,377 posts)could pass independently of the $3.5T bill, if the parliamentarian allowed it. However leadership may be more inclined to attach it to the current resolution to push the whole thing over the finish line.

(4,644 posts)But they only get one more reconciliation bill this session, so it will need to be merged with the 3.5t "Build Back Better" bill and force Manchin & Sinema to vote for or against defaulting on the debt
It could work out well for us, forcing those two to vote for the bill
