Gen Milley stuff Tom Cotton in a locker today, after Cotton asks him why he didnt resign over Afghanistan. This is one of the best answers Ive ever heard a military officer give before Congress.

(22,911 posts)I NEVER take it for granted that top military commanders remain fully committed to civilian rule and/or that they owe their sole allegiance to the Constitution and not to anyone aspiring to be a strong man. Democracies so often die at the hands of the military, but ours (in at least the vast majority of instances) serves to defend ours. I have great respect for General Miley. Well done Sir

(70,641 posts)In his case about the park, two things: 1- I, a daily DUer & slightly better up-on-things than a random somebody on the street, had not heard of or heard that apology. Back then, I had the image of him as a Drumpf flying monkey such that I skipped/discounted anything coming from him. In all that time since, it's only been in the past few BIDEN months that my opinion about him has begun to change.
2- His answer to COTTON here hits the perfect note. Now. ("Now" as in at-this-time/NOW.) The clarity is perfect. He must have known this philosophical content back then during the Drumpf time. The thing is that in that walk to the park he even had the time to put on (fatigues?) or whatever costume, which is not a thoughtless activity, is a deliberate activity with time to reflect on the meaning, so was the just-following-orders overpowering of all thought?
*******That said, where I'm coming from regarding apologies: In my own personal kingdom for myself, where I have my own rules on how I process the machinations of everything: Apologies of *any* kind - sincere or not - are WORTHLESS. The damage is done. The bell can't be un-rung. Perchance there can be remorse, but that is only good for the offender's benefit. Nothing can dissolve the original pain, restore the physical/emotional damage.
I still remember that walk to the park. Distant, way far away, I felt shock, revulsion, brutal bullying and force. I wasn't there, yet I felt the brutality aimed at me personally. And yeah, I missed the apology somehow.
Luckily, my personal little rules apply only to myself.
ShazzieB
(16,268 posts)There are many kinds of apologies, and imo, it's an unfair oversimplification to lump them all together and label every single one of them as worthless.
I don't expect to change your mind, and I don't want to argue. I am simply stating my position. If I had the energy, I might elaborate further about different kinds of apologies, what makes one worth more than others, etc ., but I'm kind of short on energy right now, so I'll just leave you with this link:

They said that once you make Lt Cmdr or Cmdr, that's where the rubber really meets the road as far as responsibility is concerned.
I only mentioned this because I think some people may not be familiar with rank, and have overestimated Cotton's leadership and responsibility in the Army.

(67,757 posts)Enlisted ranks (E-1 to E-9)
Officer grades (O-1 to O-10)
One thru three Newbies, don't know crap from apple butter, good for scut work, O-3 might let 'em off the leash once in awhile
Four and five-officers, four thru six-enlisted Got something going for them, but they're like the eldest kid in a large family, lots of responsibility, some or little authority
O-6, E-7&8, They know stuff and, more importantly, know people, important people. Can trust 'em to run things and not screw up.
E-9 and O-7 to O-10, Sergeants Major/Chiefs, Generals/Admirals. But for the grace of God, goes God.
Unless Cotton was in a fast track or direct combat MOS, he wasn't a special boy.

(7,192 posts)Scut work? Dont know anything? Really? A poor choice of words.
Those 0-1 through 0-3 officers, commanding E-1 through E-7 soldiers and Marines, are the point of the spear. They do most of the fighting and damn near all of the dying. Read the book Matterhorn by former Marine platoon leader, Karl Marlantes, and then tell me again about scut work.

(23,143 posts)Is he a sergeant or a major?? or neither?
I know that the Sergeant-Major of the Army is the top enlisted man in the army, but that still doesn't really clear it up for me on my question. I can grasp "lieutenant-general" or "major general", but sergeant major baffles the bejeezus out of me.

(4,473 posts)Which is way down on the totem pole. I was given a medical discharge because of wounds, but I would have gotten out anyway because I knew that I wasn't suited for a military career.
Starting with my grandfathers, it has been something of a family tradition to go into the military, get to the rank of army Captain or equivalent, and then get out. There were three exceptions: I made it only to First Lieutenant, my twin brother was an enlisted man in the navy who stayed in for twenty years (he was an E-8 -- Senior Chief Petty Officer -- and when the executive officer of his ship asked him if he was going to stay in, he said that he would if they promoted him to E-9 or gave him a warrant. The XO said he couldn't do that, so my brother told him that he was retiring) and an uncle who was the equivalent of a Major in the Royal Air Force. I also have an uncle and a cousin who never served in the military.
No one in my childrens' generation has been in the military.
Ilsa
(61,690 posts)thank you. Plus, your explanation of your twin brother's experience was interesting. Too bad they couldn't or wouldn't make the deal for him. I hope he is enjoying retirement.

(7,807 posts)According to his Senate webpage, he is a member of the Senate Judiciary committee, the Intelligence Committee, and the Armed Services Committee.
1. What did he do on the Judiciary committee when Merrick Garland was nominated, but never brought to a vote because Mitch McConnell didn't feel like it?
2. What did he do on the Intelligence committee when it became obvious even to rethugs that TFG ignored any and all intelligence about what was happening in Afghanistan and what was going to happen once the US left that country?
3. What did he do or what is he doing about the impact on the military because of the failed efforts at occupying and "rebuilding" Afghanistan?
Since we don't hear about any heroic rethug-led efforts in any of these areas, perhaps he would like to take the opportunity to discuss these issues.
Until he can do something to gee... I dunno... assist somebody (anybody! ) in easing problems instead of shooting his foul mouth off for the cameras, he can go fuck himself with a pitchfork coated with cyanide.

(35,929 posts)thank you.
I'm not being positive about his behavior in observing that he knew better than to use 'attitude' or cheap shot tactics. He knew his question was shut down, but he also knew that he along with the other trump types just got informed about military-civilian command practices through Milley. That Trump would even rely on Cotton or other Republican vets or 'advisors' over Milley shows the breadth and depth of the party brain pool that Trump and Cotton want to play big fish in.
