https://www.thedailybeast.com/mocking-unvaccinated-covid-victims-is-the-new-pandemic-blood-sport?ref=home?ref=homeThere is a whole online-ecosystem of content-creators who make a living by mocking conspiracy-theorists. Flat-earthers, sovereign-citizens, anti-vaxxers... you name it.
There are websites that are dedicated to mocking anti-vaxxers that have died from COVID. In the article I linked above, the author bemoans this lack of civility on OUR part.
The anti-vaxxers are LITERALLY killing themselves to SPITE us, because they HATE us. But us being human, us having a breaking-point, us having limits to our tolerance, us enjoying it when someone suffers who wished suffering upon us, that's somehow an unexcusable act of malice we should feel bad for.

(115,267 posts)They've been told covid is a hoax; or at least that the vaccines are more dangerous than the disease, which is just a sort of flu. They've been told that their immune systems are strong enough to withstand covid and the only people who die of it are already sick or old enough that they were going to die soon anyhow. They are not killing themselves to spite us; they are being stupid and ignorant to spite us with the result that they are killing themselves.

So I think both your point and the other one are correct.
There are going to be doctoral dissertations written on this phenomenon, so we shall find out the exact thought process
at some point. But the researchers need to act fast, their subjects are dying in droves.

Those types were never going to vote for our side anyway. And many of them, if they had their way, would end all elections anyway... with their permanent "strong leader" trying to impose their right-wing social norms on everyone.

(8,049 posts)their political and religious beliefs, is the tremendous arrogance and bravado on display--right up until the end in some cases. They are just so cocksure of themselves, they will never be affected, they are STRONG, everyone else is weak sheep following orders, they have stronger immune systems than everyone else, they aren't at risk physically... And when they die, it's all fear and prayers and God's will and begging for money on GoFundMe (cyber-panhandling). Fascinating to watch this particular group of people get humbled, and then silenced, over and over again. Some of them overcame other illnesses including heart attacks and cancer, and they seem to believe their fighting attitude and Jesus made them prevail (less credit to doctors and modern medicine, obviously)--and seem baffled that it didn't work this time.
It's hard to witness this much stupid, it gets repetitive after a while. Here come the Prayer Warriors! Here comes God giving another dumb redneck his "angel wings"! He was a great guy! Just unwilling to take the simplest step to protect himself in a pandemic so that he can be around to support his family, mind you, but other than that, a great guy! Like a train wreck, it's hard to look away.

(12,163 posts)mockery, but it's not.
The posts that rank highest document the online life of an anti-vaxxer, with a stack of some FB, Instagram and Twitter posts that that they have shared encouraging others not to vax, etc. Then the posts take a dark turn, often with a family member taking over someone's account asking for thoughts and prayers for their loved one.
Inevitably, the person ends up on a ventilator and then dies. Some collections of posts end with a friend or family member imploring others to get the vaccine. Others double-down on the propaganda and lies, and blame everyone but the person who didn't have the vaccination.
The progression of the unvaccinated who get hospitalized is eerily similar.

(12,163 posts)sends me a link to the digital edition each week, and it's a fascinating window to peer into the lives of people who are very unlike the city folk I'm accustomed to now.
The letter was from someone who was wondering if the paper could print the reason why so many obituaries are for people under the age of 60. The obits used to take up a page before Covid. At most, a page and a half. This week there were four pages, and the ages were divided evenly between those over 65 and those under 65. Four or more pages of obits has been typical for the past few months.
The editor-in-chief responded to the writer of the letter in his weekly editorial. He said that he contacted the hospital to see if they would give him a percentage or range of the number of people who died of Covid. The hospital wasn't able to give him a number, but told him that it should be easy for him to figure out.
The willfully unvaccinated do not care enough about themselves or their families to give a damn if they live or die. They know the stakes. The pastors of churches are opinion leaders in the community, and they have a degree of culpability. The people that forward misinformation through email or share posts on Facebook are culpable, too.
I'm not sure if what I feel is pity, but it certainly isn't mockery. If I had to characterize it, I would say it's more a feeling of apathy. I have no power to change the minds of people that have made their decision, so I don't spend energy doing that anymore. Facebook has turned into a cesspool of anti-vaxx propaganda, with a couple of pictures of my cousins' kids scattered among the posts about horse paste and Trump. I don't log in anymore since there's nothing to see, and I don't want to add my meager number to the average number of daily users of the service.
So, apathy. Yeah. That's what I'm feeling right now.
