I admit, I think the filibuster is a manifestly bad idea and the root of many of our problems in DC, but even if you are for this, what possible reason is having a filibuster for what should be a perfunctory vote would there be. We literally are giving the minority the ability to tank the entire world's economy and allowing them to blame the majority. It isn't encouraging bipartisanship (in point of fact, bipartisanship is off the table).

(11,866 posts)I think the Rs want the filibuster gone. I think they are holding the debt ceiling hostage to force the Dems to get rid of the filibuster.
They are going to steal the midterms and when they do, as they expect, get back both houses, the Dems will have no way to prevent them from taking apart the rest of the train.
It will destroy the Biden Presidency, deliver the oval
game, set, match.
Again
just my guess.

(15,100 posts)That's what Mitch did with the judicial filibusters. He forced Harry Reid to remove the filibuster on the regular judges, so then Mitch could remove it for SCOTUS. If the Dems are forced (and they may be) to do any special carve-outs (Debt ceiling, voting rights), then Mitch will see it as his opening to get rid of them completely IF he is back in the majority.

(15,100 posts)But once they have breached the limit, Mitch will blow it wide open. Plus he will blame the Dems for what he himself will do. That is one of the reasons Manchin has said that he doesn't want to change the filibuster.

(13,864 posts)while they know the bill will never withstand a filibuster. It's a big part of the political theater that goes on in our government. Like the Electoral College, the filibuster is a shield, a check on direct democracy.
