Throughout our nation's history, the right to vote has been the citizenry's most potent weapon against tyranny. Expanding the right to cast a ballot and peaceably make your voice heard in our democracy has progressed in fits and starts, always opposed by authoritarians who value power without accountability. People have demonstrated in the streets, been beaten by law enforcement, and even died for the right to vote.
Show your support for voting on National Voter Registration Day by checking with your local registrar and making sure you're registered to vote. Then VOTE!

(3,413 posts)registration lapse, despite moving many times since then. I was lucky with my first vote. Prior to 1972, the voting age was 21, and then it was lowered to 18 for the 1972 November elections. I turned 21 the end of November of that year. Had the voting age not been lowered, I would have had to wait until 1976 to cast my first federal elections ballot. And I have NEVER EVER EVER voted republican.
