Manchin, Sinema to meet with Biden in talks to trim $3.5T

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two key Democratic senators are expected to meet Tuesday with President Joe Biden at the White House as the party works to narrow his $3.5 trillion legislative package and momentum builds to close the deal with centrist and progressive lawmakers.

Sens. Joe Manchin D-W.Va., and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., are linchpins for the final package — two centrist lawmakers who have balked at the price tag and are now under pressure to show Biden what amount they could live with.

Biden is expected to meet separately with Manchin and Sinema as he works to come up with a final number, according to a person familiar with the meetings and granted anonymity to discuss them.

“We just have to make difficult choices,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi told House Democrats during an evening caucus meeting Monday, according to a person granted anonymity to discuss the private session.

If Biden offers to make it a 5 year bill as opposed to 10 years, and they still don't go for it, then it'll definitely blow a hole in their entire argument.

Which hopefully be within 5 years. And the odds might actual support such an idea.

He didn't spend his years & time thoughtfully creating & putting his plan to sustain America & its citizens into the future, on paper for nothing.

I expect less from Sinema than Manchin after this meeting.
Biden's known Manchin for 30 yrs.
Sinema had an agenda before she ran as Democrat. Her history would tell us that she was a temporary D & not supriseing that once she made her name with the assist of the D Party, she's now changing Party affilliation to Independent after her 4 yrs are up. Another who wasn't always a Dem. She helped give us a slight majority, only to oppose Biden on his lifeplan for the sustainability for America's future..

I hope both emerge from the meeting with President Biden in support of him.
Best case scenario.

She loses nothing by opposing Biden.

Party switching after the fact, has become a pattern..

Pork payoffs have always (sadly) been part of the process.

A great example: If there was no federal money for Glen Canyon Dam (Lake Powell), there would have been no Civil Rights Act. The votes of two western Senators were needed.

Looking back, building that project was a huge environmental mistake. It now sits at half capacity while evaporation contributes to water loss in the basin. Even Barry Golwater expressed his vote to build the dam (though he did not support the Civil Rights Act).
