Quebec has a requirement for all gov't employees to be vaccinated so, to-date, approx 17,000 healthcare workers (and most of them front-line) are about to be fired.
This will have a helluva impact on the healthcare system in that province but the provincial gov't still thinks the requirement is important enough to be applied.

(4,554 posts)Minor corrections - they will actually be suspended w/o pay but there is no word on what may follow. Also, approx. 1/2 of the 17,000 are deemed "front-line".

(10,048 posts)unless they are vaccinated. My niece is just in her last year of nursing at University. Seems she will be able to pick her job.

(1,384 posts)who have until Oct. 15th to get vaccinated.
Quebec has lost 4000 nurses since the pandemic started.
The government has offered over a billion in bonuses to keep or hire more nurses.
Quebec has a very strong nurses union, will be interesting to see who blinks first.

(4,554 posts)I expect quite a few will come to Alberta or Saskatchewan (where the dumb-ass conservative governments are not making vaccination mandatory, even in hospitals).

in your ideology to actually do that, when push comes to shove.

(90,656 posts)And California is just so awful that way, right?
For many reasons I am glad she didnt actually do that especially since just now Idaho is being slammed with COVID.

(22,920 posts)As you're all discussing here, moving is hard for various reasons, not the least of which is economic. So I wonder how many people will be able to do so to be in areas they deem more aligned with their "values" (*cough*).
But if a significant number of people do so, it could change the landscape to create even more segregation and solidify that red/blue (for lack of a better description) geographic divide.
I really wish we could assign states for the anti-vaxx, anti-mask, anti-democracy crowd to live in to contain their selfishness, but I know that's not realistic and good people live in those states and wouldn't want to leave for various reasons.
Being human right now is especially hard.

Edit to add:
Read the CBC story- will be surprised if a significant number remain unvaccinated and end up suspended. The non-professional workers can easily be replaced, and the professionals will be losing some sweet pay checks and benefits.

(21,433 posts)workers. A nursing home chain in my community lost 10% of their employees. Don't know what the professional level breakdown is for them regarding RNs, LPNs, or Nurse's Aides. The state mandate covers all HC professionals at all levels. I think the company's mandate also covers other staff, e.g. office, kitchen, and housekeeping employees.

(14,570 posts)Let's say you were antivax and belief COVID is a hoax. But, you have a good job, a job that pays well and has good benefits, and your earnings provide most of the financial support for your family. You gonna quit just because there's a vaccine mandate?
Let's put this in perspective: I don't have data on how many people work in healthcare in Quebec, but the population is 8.5 million. The state of Virginia is a good proxy for healthcare employment since it has 8.6 million poeple. In Virginia employment in healthcare is approximately 388,705.
We can reasonably assume that the ratio of healthcare industry workers is similar between Quebec and Virginia, so 17,000 people is approximately 4.4% of the industry in a state the size of Quebec.
But wait - there is no way 17,000 people are just going to allow themselves to be fired by refusing to take a vaccine. The City and County of Denver in Colorado has 11,000 employees, and only 700 are pitching a bitch about vaccine mandates in that huge organization. Seven hundred.
So maybe, just maybe around 500 will end up finally getting fired.
Anyway, let 'em. These stupid anti-vaxxers are so profoundly selfish they are willing to allow other people to die before they are inconvenienced. So (mah rahts! mah free-dum!) they end up hogging ICU beds that are needed by normal people who have done everything right but have heart conditions or need some kind of surgery. These people are slime.
Let 'em walk.

Yeah this will suck but eventually the system will recover and be better off. I think a lot of people are going to cave and get vaccinated anyway. And when they dont drop dead maybe they will be better off too if they realize they have been had by conspiracy theorists.
