No one would think twice about firing restaurant workers who refused to wash their hands or construction workers who refused to wear helmets. Vaccine mandates are a basic health and safety regulation. If you can't handle it, you shouldn't have a job.
It's time to start firing unvaccinated people: Trump fans are overdue for a lesson in consequences
The absolute certainty of losing a job is going to motivate a lot more people than the more abstract risk of dying

Despite the media doom and gloom, the truth is Hochul needs to be commended for her spine. And every other Democrat who wants to see this pandemic actually come to an end (which should be all of them!) should follow suit. Staffing shortages are a pain, especially during a pandemic, no doubt. But staffing shortages are a minor issue compared to the damage being caused by the unchecked spread of COVID-19, which is increasingly due to one cause: right-wingers who have made refusal to get vaccinated a culture war and identity politics issue. Unless such folks start tasting real consequences for their behavior, the U.S. is going to see another dark winter, as the virus continues to wreak havoc on our economy and health care system. Putting up with staffing shortages is a small price to pay to make sure that Trumpers a class of people clearly unused to the idea that actions have consequences actually start feeling real pressure to get vaccinated.
These dread-inducing headlines and anecdotal stories about health care workers quitting are concealing what is actually the far more important story: Vaccine mandates work.
A few paragraphs under the scary headline about "mass firings" in the New York Times comes the actual numbers: "As of Sept. 22, state data shows, around 84 percent of New York's 450,000 hospital workers and 83 percent of its 145,400 nursing home employees had been fully vaccinated." That is almost 10 percentage points over what the same state data set shows as the overall vaccination rate in the state. There are similar positive results in New York City, where Mayor Bill de Blasio mandated vaccines for public school workers, resulting in a 90% vaccination rate among teachers, which is 9 percentage points over the city average. Hospital systems that instituted an earlier vaccine mandate have seen even better results. New York Presbyterian, for example, set the deadline for last Wednesday and already 99% of the system's 48,000 workers are vaccinated.
The effectiveness of mandates has been documented outside of New York as well.

(5,721 posts)For no other reason than to avenge God Emperor Donald's hurt feelings? Because that's the sole motivation for many of these idiots.
Also, I'm not seeing where anyone's calling for a presidential edict. These are businesses, establishing a requirement well within their legal rights. Quote: Vaccine mandates are a basic health and safety regulation. Republican presidents already overstep their authority whenever the opportunity presents itself.
The joys of contrarianism aside, it's well past time to stop letting the inmates run this asylum.

(37,748 posts)A n/t bumper sticker does little to communicate any thing of real consequence-- it's for the lazy, so please-- elucidate your position for us.
Or simply pat yourself on the back for asking something of no relevance or consequence. You can even tell yourself it's clever if that helps you feel better about t-shirt slogans.

Novant Health said last week that 375 unvaccinated workers across 15 hospitals and 800 clinics had been suspended for not getting immunized. Unvaccinated employees were given five days to comply.
Novant Health spokeswoman Megan Rivers tweeted Monday that almost 200 of the suspended workers, including those who had submitted approved exemptions, received their first dose by Friday. The hospital confirmed that the rest of the suspended employees who did not comply were fired, although the exact number of those dismissed was not specified.
We stand by our decision to make the vaccine mandatory as we have a responsibility to protect our patients, visitors and team members, regardless of where they are in our health system, Novant Health said in a statement. We couldnt be prouder of our team members who made the choice to receive the covid-19 vaccine and remain part of our team at Novant Health.
Rivers told The Washington Post that more than 99 percent of the systems roughly 35,000 employees have followed the mandatory vaccination program. She said in a statement that Novant Health was thrilled those who chose to be vaccinated have given patients and visitors better protection against COVID-19 regardless of where they are in our health system."

(144,905 posts)Vaccine Mandates work https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2021/09/28/united-airlines-vaccine-requirement/
Uniteds deadline for meeting the requirement was Monday, and the carrier said Tuesday it has begun the process of terminating 593 employees who declined to be vaccinated and did not apply for a health or religious exemption. The company said less than 3 percent of its roughly 67,000 workforce applied for exemptions, while 1 percent didnt comply.
This is a historic achievement for our airline and our employees as well as for the customers and communities we serve, chief executive Scott Kirby and President Brett Hart wrote in a memo to employees. Our rationale for requiring the vaccine for all Uniteds U.S.-based employees was simple to keep our people safe and the truth is this: everyone is safer when everyone is vaccinated, and vaccine requirements work.
Frontier Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines also require employees to be vaccinated, although Frontier offers employees the option of showing proof of a negative coronavirus test. Other carriers, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines, have encouraged employees to be vaccinated but have not made announcements about a requirement since President Biden this month said he would mandate the shot or weekly testing at companies with more than 100 employees.

(18,968 posts)Obviously on vaccines, but also on their rights. They're being fed lies and misinformation on their recourse after getting fired. They think they'll hire a lawyer and win something, they won't, they're going to be out on their rears and will find it really hard to find a job that will take them unvaccinated.
