JOHNSON CITY, T.N. (WLOS) — Charges against a Mitchell County man accused of running over a Black Lives Matter protestor in Johnson City, Tennessee, have been dropped.

Jared Benjamin Lafer was charged with assault after a cellphone video surfaced of the incident outside a Johnson City restaurant in September 2020. In the video, you can see a vehicle driving through Black Lives Matter protesters in a crosswalk. The alleged victim, Johnathon Bowers, had both of his legs broken in the incident.

At the time, Lafer's attorney said after the hearing he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time with his wife and three kids in the car just after dinner.

"This is not a case about racism,” attorney Mac Meade said. "He did what he felt was necessary to get out of a situation that he felt was dangerous to his family."

Robin Ellis, president of the NAACP for Yancey and Mitchell Counties, called for the incident to be treated as a hate crime. Ellis wrote a letter calling for the Johnson City NAACP to take action.

"This incident was not an accident,” she said in the letter.

2. So, you're advocating running over people you disagree with?

Just want to make it clear what you're saying here. You want to murder pro-lifers?

4. How do you propose people fight back?

Clearly, protesting will just give Republicans reason to run-over more of us. (In states that have legalized that sort of thing).

If the state says it is legal to run protestors over. I honestly wouldn't recommend it because I would still expect the local DA to still try to prosecute (cause when they passed those laws, they didn't mean it was legal to run over THEIR people.).

Look, if you want to stand in front of the tank as it runs you over, that's your call. But don't expect all of us to feel the same way.

7. Deliberately running over people isn't murder?

There's a twisted sense of morality here when it comes to dealing with people you disagree with. But you do you and see how many years you get when you deliberately run someone over.
I'm sure you'll have a lot of time to think about how you owned them Repugs.

12. If I stepped out onto a street in FL with a protest sign.....

And a MAGAT ran me over with their F-150, there would be no murder charge because Deathsantis and the FL legislature made that sort of thing LEGAL. That's my point. I am not making a morality call. Murder is a legal term, and I am saying it's not murder in many a Red State that legalized running over protestors that are in the street.

Now, there may be some sort of civil right issues that could be litigated in the Federal Courts, but I am not aware of any legal challenges on that .

16. What's really bizarre is this is the post that gets one commenting.

The hypothetical, rhetorical point that apparently if certain prosecutors think that this is okay and not attempted murder for whatever reason, it must be okay.....so as to heckle another poster......rather than commenting on the op where it ACTUALLY HAPPENED IRL.

not a good idea. Some drive 90 on the highway and it’s hard to stop.

Are you confusing street protests and highway traffic again? Not a good idea to conflate the two... it's lazy thinking.
