Days before the start of a tumultuous term, and after the Supreme Court justices divided bitterly over a Texas law that bars most abortions after six weeks, Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned an audience of law students about the frustration of having to write dissents.
"There is going to be a lot of disappointment in the law, a huge amount," she said Wednesday at an event hosted by the American Bar Association. "Look at me, look at my dissents."
Earlier this month, Sotomayor penned a scathing opinion when the court's majority allowed the Texas law to go into effect, calling the action "stunning."
"You know, I can't change Texas' law," Sotomayor said Wednesday, "but you can and everyone else who may or may not like it can go out there and be lobbying forces in changing laws that you don't like."

First step trash the filibuster.

(23,224 posts)Create a National Court of Appeals, pack it with maybe 25 good young prgressive judges. All appeals from lower courts go there. Strip the Supreme Court of its appellate jurisdiction (yes, Congress can do this--Article III), and leave it with its constitutional original jurisdiction. Clarence PubicHair can take all the naps he wants, BeerBoy Kavanaugh can drink himself into oblivion (if he hasn't already), and the nation gets justice.
A hundred times, this.

(21,447 posts)I took it differently. She was speaking to a group of law students, who are probably a bit idealistic before getting actual experience. So I took her words to be a warning that they will experience disappointments when they start practicing law and that the recent ruling on the Texas abortion law is a real life example from her own experience.

(18,486 posts)As badass and progressive as Justice Sotomayor is, I doubt she would publicly telegraph - even in code - how she thinks her colleagues are going to decide cases.

With much respect to Justice Sotomayor, she grew up in New York. I don't know that she's ever, as a mere humble citizen, tried to lobby a Texas Republican before.
I've been writing letters and emails to my Senators and Reps. for 40 years. I'm pretty sure that, over that time, none of those people ever saw a single missive I sent.
Nope. The ONLY way to "lobby" a Texas politician like Cruz, et al. is to either A) vote them the hell out of office, or B) have enough money to bribe them.

(172 posts)has taken power over a branch of government and they will be in power for decades. There is no Sandra Day OConner and Roberts attempts are negated by Coney-Barrett and Kavanaugh. The supreme court went from lean right to hard right. Maybe someday the middle class and the media will realize the working class has gone down hill since the rightward shift in the court around 1970. Now the tear down of the great society, voting rights, womens rights rolled back.
