House Democrats pass bill to raise debt limit

House Democrats on Wednesday passed a bill, 219-212, to suspend the debt limit through December 2022, sending it to the Senate, where it is expected to fail.

Why it matters: Democrats are trying to exhaust all options in order to pass the debt limit on the floor without forcing it to go through the partisan budget reconciliation process, but Republicans continue to obstruct that effort.

The vote comes shortly after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the government will default on its debt on Oct. 18 if Congress doesn’t act.

Default would lead to potentially catastrophic consequences for the economy.

What's next: The bill is now on its way to the Senate, where Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will ask for it to be passed with a simple majority vote.

However, several GOP senators (being the whiney little babies they are) have already vowed to object to that process.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday he will ask the Senate to consider a House-passed bill raising the nation's debt limit "as early as next week."

Senate Republicans have twice this week blocked a bid by President Joe Biden's Democrats to head off a potentially crippling U.S. credit default, as partisan tensions rattled an economy recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

With federal government funding due to expire on Thursday and borrowing authority set to run out around Oct. 18, Democrats who narrowly control the Senate and the House of Representatives are working to head off twin fiscal disasters -- a debt default and a government shutdown -- while also trying to advance Biden's ambitious legislative agenda.

Republicans say the Democrats should raise the debt ceiling themselves, since they are the majority party, while Democrats say it should be a bipartisan effort.
