Whether being a pile of gold, "all about the Benjamins", "a pound of flesh", or the original, 30 pieces of silver, the stereotype of Jews and money is long-lasting and often employed to debase the Jew as greedy, unrealistic, and almost demonically consumed with a desire for riches. Usury laws in the Middle Ages just added to the myth, as did a few, but well-known, Jews who became (or are) insanely wealthy, despite being a minuscule part of overall wealth.

Helmer is my representative. This ad is despicable, but not surprising. We’ve been inundated with Pyon mail fliers for a couple of months now, but this is a new low. The Republican Party is clearly shoveling money at Pyon to get him elected.

The depiction of Helmer in that ad does not look at all like him. The hooked nose and greedy wringing hands salivating over piles of money are clearly meant to convey that Helmer is Jewish, a fact that I did not know up until now (not that it matters). Pyon is treading on thin ice; the antisemites who that ad is meant to appeal to are probably also not fond of the large Korean community in this area (Pyon is Korean).

The races in Virginia are uncomfortably close. The prospect of going back to the bad old days of Republican rule is terrifying.
