Yale Says Its Vinland Map, Once Called a Medieval Treasure, Is Fake

Doubts crept in around Greenland, which looked so good it was frankly suspicious, and questions soon spread all over the map: about the wormholes, the handwriting and, most important, the weirdly crumbling ink.

For over half a century, scholars have fought over the authenticity of the Vinland Map, which Yale University unveiled to the world in 1965; at the time, calling it evidence of Viking explorations in the western Atlantic, the first European depiction of North America and a precious medieval treasure.

Yale now says someone duped a lot of people.

-snip-

The university said that a team of conservators and scientists, analyzing the elements in the map’s lines and text, found high levels of a titanium compound used in inks that were first produced in the 1920s. Mr. Clemens said the team hoped to publish an article in a scientific journal. Ars Technica, Smithsonian Magazine and Gizmodo, among other news outlets, reported the conclusion this month.

Is usually too good to be true.

I am also suspicious of the Diary of Merer (the recollections of someone who worked on the pyramids).

Almost every book of the new testament has fragments or even complete sections dated to within 100-150 years of the events portrayed.

That gap does make some sense, as it would have taken a few generations for the following to have grown large enough that enough copies existed for pieces to have survived.

It’s basically a paternalistic, misogynistic fantasy and should be read as such.

...with the Nag Hamadi texts is considered to be an authentic copy and around 90-100 C.E. And yet there has been no movement to incorporate it into the Bible. Its an interesting book, it excludes the miracles, stories of Jesus, etc. and only has his teachings.

But the Bible was never intended to be a true historical record. Such as the tale of David and Goliath was re-written during the Greek occupation. The Greek overlords had bronze armor, so they changed the story for Goliath to have bronze armor when it wasn't invented yet. But it did rally up those in Judah which was the intention. And lets drop the other show, 2 Timothy 16-17 doesn't say anything about scripture being 100% accurate. Just that its good for using to teach a person to be a good person, so its obvious even back then, they knew it couldn't be used for an accurate depiction of history as over time, things got embellished.

But it is interesting that some stories no doubt recorded events. Such as I read about a comet/meteor may have been the source of the Sodom and Gomorrah story. The flooding of what is now the Black Sea may be the origin of the Noah story, and I will add that there are other stories from other nearby cultures that write about a great flood. We know that there was a House of David ruling in Jerusalem at one time because they found a tablet recording a victory over it.

In just about every myth in every culture has an element of truth to it. Troy was considered just a story someone pulled out of their ass...then they found the city.

Or at least that's what the diggers think they have found. The horse may actually have been built and used by the Greeks to breech the walls of Troy.

Wish I could cite the source, but no. Just something I read in passing. But if they really truly are excavating it, and they can muster definitive proof, I'd imagine the news would be a big deal and we will be reading about it in detail some day.
