Hi all,
I have started this GoFundMe to help my mom out. Full story is in the GoFundMe link, but I will give a summary. My mom has been having health and blood pressure problems and is a 72 year old widow. She is having major financial stress and I am afraid something serious will happen if this stress continues. My mom and I have always tried to get through it before, but now she has been hit very hard and I really needed to start this for her. Anything you can give I will be extremely thankful for.
Here is the GoFundMe link:

Thank you very much,

(12,360 posts)She should not continue paying it.
Have you investigated social services?
This is only part of the plan for my mom and me to be more financially stable. I have some things that could be used for disability. There are places that help with utilities and transportation. Maybe other senior services. I do some care for my mom but I am looking into those. I have a friend who helps out with borrowing money but she isnt the solution.
Her lawyer hasnt recommended bankruptcy but we will keep it in mind.
While I wont be kicking the thread anymore as the goal has been reached, I will still reply to others.
Best wishes to you and your mom,

(12,607 posts)Supplemental Security Income. Also check your local Area Agency on Aging to see if she qualifies for aid such as food stamps, housing aid, Medicaid, etc.
mvd
(65,169 posts)She gets food stamps (and thank President Biden and the Democrats for boosting them!) but they dont last the whole month.
This thread is because of the immediate emergency.

(65,169 posts)My mom already feels better and we are well on our way to our goal. I cant thank DU enough!

(65,169 posts)The SSA told us that my mom could only receive one of the two when my dad died.

(4,170 posts)She wasnt hard up for money so it wasnt a real conversation, but I helped her with her mail and so on. Im sure she did.
mvd
(65,169 posts)But when my dad was alive it was $600 higher which made a difference.
Just worried she was missing out. I have to say they were one of the easiest bureaucracy I had to deal with. At least in that instance.
They were right on it. I remember thinking how odd it was they knew he was dead before we notified anyone. Funny that, huh?
mvd
(65,169 posts)I am glad we have President Bidens appointee in the SSA now. My mom was supposed to get a one time $200 bonus but didnt. That was the only issue.

(6,227 posts)I hope my donation helps. How come you Mom doesn't get part of your Dad's Social Security?
mvd
(65,169 posts)I hope that policy changes. Thank you very much!
She should be getting hers and half of his.
Thats what I get and all the people that I know who are widows get the same.
mvd
(65,169 posts)Mom lost her part. I hope she is getting the right amount.

(65,169 posts)DU has been extremely kind. I have been here for 20 years and know how it can come through. I bet my moms blood pressure reading will be better today!
I will be withdrawing the money today as it takes 2-5 business days to transfer. But I will leave the fundraiser open for now because you I can withdraw again.

(6,829 posts)Can we get her a couple hundred extra to help her really breathe easier? When you're this poor and desperate you have no idea how helpful that extra can be.

I am so happy I started this. I do not like asking for money, but I have been at DU a long time and felt it would work out. I also do not like showing my picture as I am private, but it wasnt so bad. I actually did not intend for my eyes to look closed - I am not good at taking selfies.

(54,329 posts)I have been breaking mirrors for decades with mine. If the mirror is still intact afterwards, it's only because my wife was with me when the pic was taken.

(65,169 posts)This is my second GoFundMe. The first one was set up to help with dads cancer bills and only went to relatives. But I have drifted apart from those relatives which is a shame.
electric_blue68
(14,848 posts)Well, there are genuine reasons why relatives can drift apart.
Good you've got DU for support.
I've been here for 16 months so I'm pretty recent, enjoying my time here. 👍

(65,169 posts)I am just bringing this up once for an update. Mom is doing better. I cant imagine where she would be without DUs generosity! I am leaving the fundraiser up until October 20. This is a 5 week wait for moms Social Security and she could still use a little more breathing room and less stress. Whatever you can do in the week I keep the fundraiser up would be appreciated.
Hugs to all!
