this was my first year for the higher dose version (now that I am 65) - I've gotten the flu vaccine for years with not a bit of reaction. Had my shot in the mid afternoon, was fine, tiny bit of injection site soreness. Went to bed at midnight - couldn't fall asleep, then all of a sudden felt really cold (just couldn't warm up) - then felt really warm and in a bit of a cold sweat (wife felt my forehead, noted I was warm). Arm was sore, got up for some ibuprofin - felt really nauseous. Went back to bed and was on my back - drifted off, slept until 7, the various symptoms were gone - spent yesterday low energy...today feel great (just went on a long hike off of the Blue Ridge parkway).
So weird - like I went through an array of flu symptoms overnight - then - poof - they were gone. My assumption is that it was the higher dose in the 65 and older super duper version, maybe the particular mix of components.
Weird!

(66,328 posts)can cause; the stimulation of your immune system to produce immune antibodies came with symptoms this time. Thank you for getting your flu vaccine. I still have to arm-wrestle some of my patients best two-out-of-three just to get them to get their immunizations.

(102,236 posts)will mean that many, with fully robust immune systems, will "overreact" a bit, resulting in more vaccine reactions... Unfortunately, it is very hard to tailor such recommendations to the individual and the kind of testing required for an accurate assessment of anyone's individual immune function is extensive and costly.
At least you know you are likely to have an optimal (and maximal) immunity resulting, I guess. Far better than having to worry if you will respond adequately at all.
Hope you feel better.

(60,014 posts)So now I've got my flu, got my shingles a few years ago - I think I am due for pneumonia vax for the first time very soon. Hoping for the Moderna booster before too long.
I feel like an old car that needs to be run into the shop in a timely manner so everything keeps running well!
As a scientist, I do believe and trust science.

(18,402 posts)was not of the fluish variety. Like the OP, Id never had the least reaction before, save for a sore arm for a day or two. First senior dose my arm turned bright red and incredibly swollen from elbow to shoulder and exuded a surprising amount of heat to the touch. It was a condition that persisted for about three days before subsiding. The next year I got the senior dose again, and this time the swelling and redness and heat went from wrist to shoulder, and lasted a week. My arm blew up like a balloon. None of this was life threatening or anything, but it was a bit alarming, and quite uncomfortable.
After that I consulted a doctor at the minute clinic before getting the shot for the third time. She was concerned to give it to me, saying the reaction could get worse over time and lead to anaphylaxis. So I just got the regular dose ... no reaction. Ever since, I ask for the regular dose. My internist said, well, some protection is better than none, so go ahead.

(58,785 posts)I normally have virtually no notable reaction to any vaccines (not good of course), but the site was sore without touching it and itched through the following day. And is still sore a bit now that you draw my attention to it.
In any case, "congratulations" on an apparently robust response. My husband had your reaction, same symptoms, etc, with the new Pfizer booster.

(1,967 posts)I was surprised that I didn't even have a sore arm. I experienced soreness to it last year, and soreness to both covid vaccine shots.

(182,788 posts)The shingles arm hurt but that was it. I did lots of mobility stuff yesterday and today I did some push-ups. Yeah, Ive been lifting you can probably tell.
No pain anymore.

(19,200 posts)and you're able to lead a normal life?
I was down for two days after the first shot, and I'm dreading the second (which I'm due for in another few weeks). From what people have told me it's a lot worse than the first. I have to choose a day when I don't have any appointments for a few days afterward.
I has no reaction to my flu shot, or even my three Pfizer COVID shots, but the Shingrix shot kicked my ass! 🥵

(182,788 posts)I learned from my COVID shot - right in the shoulder bone and hurt for a month.
so far so good on the second shingle shot.

(19,200 posts)Everyone reacts differently. For some reason my body just hates Shingrix I guess? I wonder if it's because I had the other, much less effective, shingles shot 5 years ago?
Who knows, but I'm dreading the second one. They're rather expensive as well, at least they were for me. The first was close to $100 and the second is even more expensive, or so I've heard.
Still, it's better than getting shingles. My uncle had them....it had to be 25 years ago, and he nearly went blind. He's dead now, but from old age, not from shingles.

(182,788 posts)Our insurance covered it. Im pretty sure the first shingles shot was $65 or something two years ago. Same insurance. Apparently I got the pneumonia shot 7 years ago (when I smoked).
SergeStorms
(19,200 posts)used a small dose of the live herpes virus as it's immunizing agent to get the body to produce antibodies. In later tests they found it was only around 30% effective.
That's when they came up with the Shingrix vaccine. My first shot was $97. I'm sure Medicare or my supplemental insurance covered at least some of that. Maybe
Like I said, getting Shingles isn't an alternative I'd want to explore, so I'd pay almost anything.

But don't worry...you will most likely not feel good, but you don't feel like you are going to die, and it's a good chance to relax for a few days.

(1,425 posts)But the second one wiped me out the next day. Fortunately, the side effects only lasted about 24 hours.

(17,425 posts)The second shingles shot wiped both me and my wife right out.
I was going to get the flu/Covid booster combined the other day, but decided to wait a few weeks to get the flu vac.
I'm going to get the flu shot, but I'm not sure why.
I mean, it's not like I have an actual life, where I leave the house more than once a month without my usual 15 layers of PPE.

(19,200 posts)been wearing masks and taking every precaution, that even a cold virus would hit us hard.
I haven't had a cold or anything for almost two years now. I used to get two colds a year, almost like clockwork. If I got the flu, or even a common cold right now, I think I'd get sicker than a dog on Ivermectin. My immune system has only been exposed to whatever is in the vaccines I've taken I'm almost two years.
This mask wearing routine really works for cutting down on contracting diseases. I think I'll keep wearing them now, pandemic or no pandemic.

(115,683 posts)the usual sore arm for a couple of days. Then on Sunday when my arm wasn't sore any more I got the covid booster, same reaction as the second one last March, except that I'm still fatigued five days later - that lasted only two days last time. Don't know whether that's a double whammy from two vaccines within three days or it just turned out that way.

(13,869 posts)Doctors will tell you that the bad side effects are simply a result of your immune system kicking into high gear to fend off what it sees as an attempt by a virus to infect you.
I typically have no reaction other than a sore arm to shots, but my second Covid shot put me on the couch for a 6 hour nap the day after I had it. The booster I got earlier this week had no effect at all, not even a sore arm.

(1,520 posts)I have never had any reaction at all to the regular flu shot. So, it was a real surprise when I woke up the night of the day that I got the shot in my arm was killing me. And, I had a fever of 102. The next day my fever went down but I still felt pretty whooped.
then, that night I woke up and could barely walk to the bathroom because I was shaking so hard. I took my temperature and it was 103.1.
then, the next day it all went away. Arm stopped hurting and I felt fine.
it is making me a little bit reluctant to get the shot again. But, having almost died from the flu when I was 17 I think Ill probably get the shot. Already got my Covid booster shot and I feel pretty bad right now but the fever is nowhere close to the super flu shot. I got 99.5. So, I can function.

(50,269 posts)apparently injected the vaccine into the shoulder capsule rather than the muscle and I was really sick for about 3 months. It wasn't the vaccine, but the improper technique. I'm dreading it anyway.

(16,389 posts)I'm not an anatomist, but it sounds like that pharmacist must have stuck the needle in way too high on the arm to be able to hit the shoulder capsule. It shouldn't be all that hard to avoid a repeat.
In any case, kudos to you for going ahead with the shot, despite your (well-justified) fears. Some people would just not go back for the second one, and that would be a shame. to you.

(50,269 posts)far haven't seen one. My husband tells me the pharmacist in question is gone, so that's encouraging.

(65,010 posts)I just got my first 65 & over dose, too. (Turned 65 a week ago, got shot this past weekend.)
Nothing! Not even soreness at the injection spot.
Sorry you had the opposite.

(645 posts)Left the pharmacy and went shopping. I woke up at 3AM chilled and with a headache. Overly fatigued for the next 2 days. The first two I was asymptomatic. I got the over 65 flu vaccine last year and did not have a symptom . Now it is time for me to get my yearly flu shot and I will wait until November. Can you be over vaccinated?

(17,288 posts)I had an appointment for a minor with with my primary Docors Nurse practitioner and called the morning of to add a flu vaccine. I had my husband come with me so I could ask if they had time to give him his flu shot as well since his primary was part of the same group.
Husband qualifies for the higher dosage. Apparently the nurse thought that by association I was over 65 also. At 30ish anyone over 50 probably looks ancient haha. Anyway we were both given the 65 dosage and husband had zero effects and I had a very sore arm for 2 days but not flu symptoms. Glad yours didnt last long!
