October 20, 2012|By Meg James | Tribune Newspapers
With Tribune Co. expected to emerge from bankruptcy soon, News Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch is looking to acquire two of its trophy properties: the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.
Tribune Co.'s debt holders will become majority owners of the company after it exits bankruptcy, which could happen by year's end. News Corp. executives have had preliminary talks with these debt holders about acquiring the Tribune and the Times, according to two ranking News Corp. executives and others familiar with the situation.
These people cautioned that talks are in the early stages and that a deal is by no means certain. Other potential buyers have expressed interest. On Saturday, a spokeswoman for News Corp. said the reports were "wholly inaccurate."Tribune Co., based in Chicago, owns the Tribune and Times and six other papers.
Murdoch, 81, heads the world's largest news company, which includes The Wall Street Journal and The Times of London. Acquiring the Tribune and the Times would give him strong footholds in the nation's three largest media markets: New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

(13,227 posts)The biggest issue concerns the TV stations News Corp. owns in those two markets - two each. The FCC typically has a problem with broadcast/newspaper cross-ownership. Then again, the FCC often rolls over in situations like this.
I hope the Obama FCC uses this opportunity to stick it to Murdoch. After his company's war against him and our country, he shouldn't expect the FCC to be his bitches.

Shut this fucker down.
No more than one newspaper and one television station per corporation or individual, I say.
