Andrew Yang got to push his new book and talk about the new political party hes attempting to launch during an interview on Saturday, but once the plugging was over, CNNs Jim Acosta pressed the former president and New York City mayoral candidate on why he agreed to speak with Tucker Carlson recently.
I want to ask you, Andrew, because youre talking about fixing this system and youre talking about, you know, bringing in better people into the political process, but I have to ask you about an interview that you did with Tucker Carlson recently, Acosta said. It took a bizarre turn when Tucker suddenly brought up the Unabomber. I want to play that and ask you about this on the other side.
CNN then showed a video clip from Carlsons web-only show where, while speaking with Yang, the Fox News host gave credit to the Unabomber for an unoriginal idea about how large organizations can sometimes systematically morph into a self-protecting entity first and foremost.

Ted Kaczynski, I have to say, has written very convincingly on this. The Unabomber bad person but smart analysis, I think, of the way systems work, Carlson said in the clip. And his argument is that large organizations, over time, morph into purely self-preservation projects. Like a big, a big system, in the end, protects itself, and thats kind of all it does. So, our two-party system is certainly in that category.

(8,361 posts)As it is not directly related to this clip. I don't believe reaching out to voters is a bad idea at all. We have to try, but more importantly, what is Yang selling? Would his new party be offering anything that would pull cons from one bad place to a better more equitable place?
I do believe the evidence suggests, no. Yang seems to come off to some as a reasonable guy who wants to help. I hope more Republicans and especially Independents consider Biden, not Yang.
( Excerpt ) For many of the programs he omits like SNAP (better known as food stamps) or housing vouchers a person has to demonstrate a certain amount of financial hardship in order to qualify. While the Freedom Dividend should hypothetically be available to everyone, his campaigns loose grasp on what benefits disabled people even use in the first place suggests it may not.
For example, the FAQ on universal basic income on Yangs website includes basic errors. It notes: some people who receive more than $1,000 a month in SSI would choose to take the Freedom Dividend because it has no preconditions. This means they they can opt-in without having to deal with a degrading and paternalistic bureaucracy, Yangs national press secretary told me. However, the problem with this statement is that it conflates SSI, Supplemental Security Income, with SSDI, Social Security Disability Insurance, which encompass very different things.
SSDI consists of cash payments to people who have a disability that prevents them from having a job. The amount of money a person gets from SSDI is based on work credits the longer a person has worked and the higher the persons previous wage, the more money that person may be entitled to.

(27,843 posts)His simplistic approach to problems was a red flag, but his arrogance always turned me off more. And I really disliked how he was hailed as a prominent Democrat and given a platform on the cable channels (MSNBC in particular). He turned out not really be a Democrat at all.

(4,947 posts)didn't think he had a snowballs chance. I don't think this new party thing will go very far either.
Now, if I had been on tucker's show (not that I would EVER do that!) I would have thrown this right back at him and responded with something like "and I would add cable news channels like Fox News, you guys are in the preservation mode and don't bring up that stupid argument that "we're entertainment". We all know what you are.
