Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsJust totally disgusted. A friend called and told me he has a break-thru Covid, that ...
... his whole family was vaxxed and now has Covid: he, his mother, dad and grandmother.
His mother is going to be given the infusion this morning, I do not know how they are going too treat his invalid 90yr old Grand mom or his diabetic and very ill dad.
He went to an Octoberfest in Fredricksburg (Trumpsville) with two unvaxxed friends. They have Covid.
I've been in a car with him once to grab a coffee, once in the last month, this last Sunday.
Between deniers and liars, I couldn't hate living in Texas more.
Did I mention, I started a part time job? I've notified them and they said to come in masked - I wear one of the 12 good fabric ones I have that totally go from the top of the nose and under my chin. Three layers of hi grade quilting fabric with a coffee filter almost all the time.
The hospitals out here are all crammed with Covid - 90+% unvaxxed.
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. This is not from the government, these are folks who bought into Reagan's big lie: government is ineffective and unnecessary - if this were true, why do they fight so hard to run it? If voting was useless, why are they fighting so hard to stop it? If it were trully useless, they'd be ENCOURAGING us to vote!!!!
Vote like our lives depend on it, because our lives really do depend on it.

It also could be he's lying out of shame, but I've pushed the question at him hard and he insists he's vaxxed.
I have been misled by my students at the art classes I teach. I've only opened six to eight weeks total over two periods in the last almost two years. I was led to believe everyone took it serious and about a month ago, one died of covid, one's husband has covid and is self treating with horse dewormer. Out of eight only one had been vaxxed. And various other family members of students have been infected, too.
My neighbor lied to me about it, causing me to have to put off medical treatment over VA about it.
I know longer trust anyone about it. It certainly brings home the need for a vaxx passport.

(2,042 posts)We moved to Montana from Austin many years ago. At first, I missed Austin desperately and almost moved back to Texas, but fortunately stuck it out. Now I love Montana, but there are waaaaay too many Republican Trump humpers here.
It was tolerable when we had Democratic governors like Steve Bullock and Brian Schweitzer. They were both amazing! Strong, intelligent, caring leaders. But now we have Gianforte, who is truly horrid. Thank God we still have Jon Tester in the Senate, but who knows if he'll be able to keep his Senate seat next election, the way things are going around here. We need more Dems and we need them now!
So yes, I strongly encourage all Dems from Texas and elsewhere to move to Montana, post haste!
The winters are not as bad as people might imagine, the outdoor recreation activities are limitless (two national parks!), and college towns Missoula and Bozeman are Democratic havens (although I'd encourage you to move to a "red" county nearby one of these two cities to help counteract the Republican population).

(34,117 posts)despite the study out of Los Angelos from the spring/summer which people misconstrued as meaning breakthrough cases were rare.
My employee (vaccinated, and one of the most careful people I know) started showing symptoms on a Saturday. Her entire family was tested on Monday or Tuesday. All 5 were positive. She originally thought her children brought it home from school, but based on timing of her husband's and children's symptoms, she brought it home to them from work (where everyone wears a mask), a single weekly shopping trip (unknown, some unmasked exposure), or her parents (who aren't sick). That's the extent of her exposure.
As to the entire family testing positive - once one gets it, this thing is so contagious that everyone is going to get it in most families. My employee started isolating, but too late - she thought her early symptoms were allergies. Even after she started isolating she took turns on night shift for their chronically ill daughter. That was enough to infect the entire family.
I'm one of the few people who mask at home at all. When a member of my family has been exposed, I wear a mask at home (including for sleeping). During the most contagious periods I sleep separate from my spouse. That may not be enough **when** she contracts it. (Yes, I'm expecting it. She treats her mask as a magic talisman that she wears around her neck more than over her face.)
Based on my personal experience, I see nothing fishy at all about this story - more people need to hear it and understand the reality of COVID.
MyMission
(1,851 posts)I was thinking the same as I read the comments.
And I'll add that vaccinated people can also be asymptomatic and spread it.

It's still out there, circulating and mutating. It might be time to double mask again.

(12,632 posts)Its silly to even try to go for "zero covid" because of the way the virus works. I'v been vaccinated along with my family and, as far as i know, all my closest friends. I still wash my hands 100x a day & usually wear a mask among crowds. But the days of locking everyone up at home are over. It just wont work & is totally impractical here. Look at NZ; they did total lockdowns several times and STILL got more cases. And they're an ISLAND.
Odds are good that if you do catch it & you're vaccinated, you wont end up in the hospital. And i believe that the vaccines will be improved as this does on.

A coworkers relative has tested positive. He lives in another city. Hes not vaccinated and believes that COVID is not anything to worry about. Hes only feeling a little tired at this point and (get this!!!!) hes on his way to the grocery store to stock up in case he gets sick and cant go out.
This!!! This, people, this is why the pandemic wont stop. Why we must continue to mask and distance and wash and never let up. This!

Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)Or, at a minimum, your friend was not wearing his mask at least when he went with his friends to Octoberfest, and possibly not with you, because he was vaccinated.
So - not only vote, but act as if you weren't vaccinated. Take all the same precautions. I've been sounding that alarm since the CDC said to toss the masks.
My employee and all of her family (2 vaccinated adults and 3 unvaccinated children) got COVID about 3 weeks ago. She has just been exposed, again, by another faculty member who has a habit of "forgetting" his mask - especially on dashes to the bathroom where we have Trump toilets (ones that require excessive flushing and spreading around of fecal-associated COVID particles). He is vaccinated, and just before he came down with COVID he had gotten his booster.
The standard rule for vaccinated individuals is that it is OK to continue to circulate if you are wearing a mask. Obviously, that isn't sufficient, any more than the vaccination was sufficient when the CDC also said to toss the masks. My employee was almost certainly exposed at work - where she (and everyone she comes into contact with) is masked. Personally, when I am told I am exposed, I isolate until I can test negative ~4 days after exposure. Not everyone has that luxury - so a well-fitted triple layer mask is probably reasonable to protect others.

(34,117 posts)Without much thought at all, I can name 2 dozen vaccinated individuals who have had breakthrogh cases. If I spent much time thinking about it, it would be a lot more.
With the increased R0 (8, rather than 1 or so), and the decreased effectiveness of the vaccines, they are (at best) about 40% effective - compared to the protection they offered early on.

Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)Now you make a statement so someone on DU can say that you are not telling there truth.
Both vaccinated adults in my employee's household got it.
If you are living unmasked in your house with someone with COVID (becaus you believe yourself to be safe since you are both vaccinated), it is far MORE likely than if each of the 4 independently contracted it outside of the house (as long as they are also masking).
Once COVID invades a houselhold, it is far more likely that everyone will get it than that it will remain isolated in the single person who brought it in. That's just the nature of livingi in a household together. People, by and large, do not treat their family as sources of disease, and drop their guard around them.
I'm one of very few I know (perhaps the only) who actually does mask at home when my spouse or daughter interact with people outside the home unmasked.
louis-t
(23,309 posts)but only one of her kids got it. Statistically, if you are vaccinated, you have only 5 % chance of getting it from infected person.
Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)Those statistics come from the initial vaccine testing, applied only to the mRNA vaccines, and only to the original variant of COVID.
With the increased R0, and the decreased effectiveness of the vaccine against delta, your chances of getting the delta variant are about 40% for the same exposure that gave you a 5% chance with earlier variants. The risk with J&J is far higher.
Increased exposure viral load (i.e. extended expsoure by living, sharing a bathroom, sharing a bedroom with family members) bumps it up even more.

Ms. Toad
(34,117 posts)And two things might also be happening -
First - your friends might have the same attitude that you seem to that vaccines are a magic shield and may be ignoring COVID symptoms because they believe they can't have COVID.
The most recent exposures I've had (as in the contact tracers told me I've been exposed and, in most cases, the individuals also contacted me) were from vaccinated individuals who were sure it was just a headache (1) just a cold (2), just allergies (2), or a reaction to the vaccine (1). All but one of those has been in the last 3 weeks. All, without exception, were sure it was not COVID becuase they were vaccinated. Most of them are employees or students, so I know their status (vaccination and symptoms) via contact tracing or because they told me. Each of them was only tested because they were told they could not return to work/school until they were tested. They were gobsmacked when their results came back positive.
Second - they may not be telling you they have COVID.
louis-t
(23,309 posts)I just found out another couple I know (diehard repugs) had it earlier this year. There was a breakout in my company in February of this year right before vaccinations were common. Since then, I only know one guy that got it in June. He was not vaccinated.

Which is all the more reason to be extra careful and not expose yourself knowingly to unvaxxed people if you have folks in that category in your life.
