So long story short, I have an eBay store. I sell health supplements like beet root capsules, charcoal capsules, echinacea capsules, etc. Well two of what I sell are apple pectin capsules and powder. Lately I've seen a humongous surge in purchases for both and I've had to restock several times in the past month and a half. I had no idea why this was all of a sudden selling like crazy when both were one of my least selling products. Then I got this strange message on eBay from someone that spent well over $30 dollars alone for the rest of what I had left.

I shit you not, antivaxxers are now using these and the other three supplements for some miracle preventive. I checked to see if any of these other ingredients were in stock where I get my supplies and no joke, most if not all are out of stock.
I have absolutely no words for this.

(9,535 posts)Pectin can interfere with certain substances. It is known to decrease the absorption of beta-carotene, an important antioxidant found in colorful plants and fruits. The inadequate intake of beta-carotene can lead to vitamin A deficiency manifesting with symptoms such as dry skin, dry eyes, night blindness, impaired fertility, and an increased risk of throat and chest infection.
Pectin can also interfere with the absorption of certain pharmaceutical drugs, including:
Digoxin
Mevacor (lovastatin)
Tetracycline antibiotics

(9,535 posts)Per WebMD:
What are the risks of taking selenium?
Side effects. Taken at normal doses, selenium does not usually have side effects. An overdose of selenium may cause bad breath, fever, and nausea, as well as liver, kidney and heart problems and other symptoms. At high enough levels, selenium could cause death.
Interactions. Selenium may also interact with other medicines and supplements, such as some antacids, chemotherapy drugs, corticosteroids, niacin, cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, and birth control pills.
Skin cancer. Selenium supplements may be associated with a risk of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma), so people at high risk of skin cancer should not take these supplements.

Magnesium has issues at high doses:
When taken by mouth: Magnesium is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken appropriately. Doses less than 350 mg daily are safe for most adults. In some people, magnesium might cause stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other side effects. When taken in very large amounts (greater than 350 mg daily), magnesium is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Large doses might cause too much magnesium to build up in the body, causing serious side effects including an irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, confusion, slowed breathing, coma, and death.

People have a tendency to think "if some is good, more is better". Only up to a point of (sometimes fatal) diminishing returns.

Just like Katie Couric's story about the RBG interview came out because Couric put it in her just released book.

(1,264 posts)..if they order now, they'll get, at no extra cost, the version of the pectin supplements that contain even MORE vaccine that the ones you'd sold them before.

(10,156 posts)They would believe it, but I have high morals to do that. They can pay the four dollars per 30 capsules or 3.75 for an ounce of powder.

(13,496 posts)what health benefits does pectin purportedly have? I am pretty up on herbal supplements and vitamins/minerals, but have never come across pectin as anything other than a thickener in cooking.
Guess I'm not as up on supplements as I thought.

(10,137 posts)Especially since in much of the US they're at their best now. Pectin (and apples contain a lot of it) is great if you're making jellies or jams, but is there any evidence that it's better at dealing with Covid than horse dewormer - or any random placebo?
