Dr. Hotez has a cheap/more traditional/old style vaccine

My temple had Dr. Hotez speak on high holy day services. He is an amazing man. He discussed the fact that Baylor has developed a very cheap vaccine that has not gotten FDA approval but will be used overseas.

Now, nearly 18 months later, the Houston team’s vaccine, called Corbevax by its maker in India, is cheap, has no patent, can be made by many vaccine producers globally — including those in low- and middle-income countries — and is poised to receive approval for widespread global use.

The Indian government has promised the biopharmaceutical company Biological E Limited, which is making the vaccine in that country, that it will buy 300 million doses with the potential for more.

A halal version of the vaccine, for use in Islamic countries because it doesn’t contain animal-based ingredients, is also about to start clinical trials in Indonesia.

And later this year, the company hopes the vaccine will be endorsed by the World Health Organization for use globally, which could open the doors to quicker authorization in several countries that need it.....

“Much of sub-Saharan Africa, large swaths of Latin America and other places like that — they really don’t have access to the [mRNA] vaccines,” said Cutrell, an associate professor in the department of internal medicine. “That makes it really important and attractive to have some of these cheaper, easier-to-distribute — but hopefully similarly effective — vaccines with more traditional technology, which I think this vaccine and other vaccines like it can contribute.”

The article discusses the fact that this is a more traditional vaccine that may help with some anti-vaxxers. I am proud to have Dr. Hotze as part of the Houston Jewish community

I don't know where you live but if you are sick and need a medical center there aren't too many places more prestigious, cutting edge or able on the entire planet than the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

On edit, I see you are listed as living in Oklahoma on your profile. Gimme a fucking break.

The FDA had to give this jerk a warning.

https://www.fda.gov/inspections-compliance-enforcement-and-criminal-investigations/warning-letters/health-wellness-center-international-one-llc-dba-hotze-vitamins-607276-12022020

He's also a GOP/Talibornagain goon.

Last year was a busy one for Hotze, whoe sued unsuccessfully to overturn Gov. Greg Abbott's order shutting down businesses due to COVID-19. And at the height of the protests after the murder of George Floyd, Hotze left a voicemail for the governor, via Abbott's chief of staff: “I want to make sure that he has National Guard down here and they have the order to shoot to kill if any of these (expletive deleted) people start rioting like they have in Dallas, start tearing down businesses — shoot to kill the (expletive deleted). That's the only way you restore order. Kill ’em. Thank you,” Hotze said on the recording.

As the November election neared, Hotze filed multiple lawsuits against Democratic Harris County officials for alleged vote fraud. Then, in mid-December, he alleged that Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg conspired to retaliate against him by arresting former Houston police captain Mark Aguirre, an investigator who had been working for Hotze. Aguirre allegedly pulled a driver over at gunpoint and then searched his truck, seeking hundreds of thousands of supposedly fraudulent ballots. The truck contained no such ballots. Hotze was outraged.

There is a "Dr Hotze" in Houston, but that is notorious anti-vax RWNJ conspiracy theorist Steven Hotze. Here's a relatively recent story about Hotze's funding of violence in attempting to gin up fake "voter fraud" BS:

https://abc13.com/ballot-fraud-investigation-steven-hotze-gop-activist-dr-liberty-center-for-god-and-country/10458987/

(Please update your OP with the correct spelling of Dr Hotez's name... I had immediate WTF when I saw "Hotze" and "vaccine" in the same post, and was quite relieved to find that nut job Hotze has nothing to do with this excellent effort by Dr Hotez.)

On edit: dang, I spelled it wrong too! Corrected to Hotez.

Patent laws vary a lot from country to country, but I don't think a patented version could stop the open source version from competing freely. Publishing a description of how their vaccine is made would poison the well for future claim-jumpers.

Hotze is such an asshole that he used to help pick GOP judges back when all judges in Harris County were GOP. I had a big case that was on appeal and Hotze in 2000 decided that he did not want a strong female GOP judge on the bench and primaried this judge. The candidate he selected ran on the platform that women should not exercise power over men. I actually crossed over and voted in the GOP primary that year for McCain and a slate of sane GOP judges Luckily my judge won because my case was remanded back to the trial court in a very favorable ruling where we were able to force a settlement

Hotze was the asshole who sued to block drive through voting

The Fifth Circuit just affirmed that ruling

But it does admit that the vaccine is less powerful than the mRNA ones made by Pfizer and Moderna.

Coincidentally, this sounds like the Sinovac vaccine China released. Old-school vaccine tech using inactivated virus.

It.....has not gone well. You think breakthrough cases are bad with Pfizer or Moderna? Around 50% efficacy vs 90% in mRNA vaccines.

that will manufacture Corbevax in India so to be ready for a roll-out there by the end of November. DFC is a relatively new .gov agency but there's no mention of this deal yet on their out-of-date? website. Per this page (fair use content not available?) as of October 25, 2021 one can read more about this:

https://www.pgurus.com/hyderabad-based-biological-e-to-bring-in-their-covid-19-vaccine-by-end-of-november/

This happened under TFG, if anyone recalls:

https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/07/28/896209016/trump-gives-medical-stockpile-a-kodak-moment-with-new-loan-to-make-drugs

The Trump administration on Tuesday said it plans to give a $765 million loan to Eastman Kodak – which has struggled to survive after digital cameras displaced its once-ubiquitous camera film – so the company can manufacture ingredients used in pharmaceuticals.

It's the first investment from the U.S. International Development Finance Corp., a new and relatively obscure foreign investment agency to which President Trump has given a daunting domestic assignment. The DFC is working with the Defense Department to help find ways to rebuild the national stockpile of medical supplies depleted by the coronavirus pandemic, using manufacturing plants in the U.S. to reduce reliance on foreign factories. (snip)

I think perhaps the SEC may have stepped in on this deal - and then....

I remember reading about this vaccine a while back but I don’t think I ever saw any information regarding efficacy, side effects, or longevity of protection.

I wish them well - the world needs more low cost vaccines that don’t need special handling.
