Joe Manchin's Surefire Strategy to Ensure That Democrats Lose in 2022

Joe Manchin is doing more than Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy—combined—to cost Democrats control of Congress in 2022.

Joe Manchin’s Surefire Strategy to Ensure That Democrats Lose in 2022
If Democrats appease Manchin and fail to act on the climate crisis, they will lose a vital appeal to the young voters they need to win.

I f Joe Manchin gets what he wants in negotiations with the Biden White House and his fellow Democratic senators regarding climate policy, which now seems likely, it could have a devastating impact on the planet—and on Democrats’ prospects in 2022.

How so? Let’s answer that question by asking and answering two other questions.

First: Name an issue that young people—an increasingly important and frequently decisive voting bloc—are passionate about? When the US Conference of Mayors surveyed potential voters between the ages of 18 and 29 in 2020, 80 percent said the climate crisis was “a major threat to human life on earth as we know it.” By a 3-1 margin, young people said “bold measures” needed to be taken to address that threat.

Second: Name the issue that Democrats are now talking about downplaying in the ”Build Back Better” agenda in order to secure the West Virginia senator’s support? The Biden administration is by all accounts preparing to cut from the budget plan the Clean Electricity Performance Program (CEPP), a key climate initiative that would use a combination of incentives and mandates to get utilities to embrace renewable energy.

Warnock and Ossoff were only elected because we promised $2,000 checks out the door.

If Democrats are not going to wage culture wars to excite voters, then they need to pass huge headline-making legislation to excite the base.

Compromising causes people to stay home, just as we saw with the ACA in 2012.

More than if Dems put forth a decent bill, and forced Manchin and Sinema to vote it down.

Right now, the bill has been stripped of the CEPP, community college, Medicare expansion, lower drug prices, paid leave, billionaire taxes, and left with a year extension of the child tax credit, means tested childcare with a work requirement, and funding to cap unused oil wells and buy a government fleet of EV’s.

That’s a shit sandwich without the bread that will piss off more people than it helps.

Force Manchin to kill a good bill rather than passing a shitty one.

is getting what they want, and everyone is pissed off because of it.
But as much as we know historically the mid-terms won't be kind to the party in charge, this is a different time and a different mood. Voters are still going to be voting against Trump and anyone who ever sided with him. The things he did are still very much present in the minds of everyone.
I've been known to be wrong more than once, so who knows. But there is enough time between now and election day for this to all fade if we can't fix the damn thing and get it passed

campaign?

The best chance we’ve had in years to pass balls to the wall legislation, and along comes Manchin. I’d say more, but you all know the script.

“Don’t give us shit sandwiches and tell us it’s caviar”.

A shit sandwich bill will almost certainly suppress turnout in 2022, more than a good bill blocked by Manchin and Sinema.

8. That's why progressives should include all of Biden's agenda in the bill and force him to vote no
Thu Oct 28, 2021, 12:46 AM

It would get stuck in each committee’s report on their section of the bill, which must have a full floor vote before the language can be included in the final draft of the bill.

Rather than continue to play games with saboteurs who won’t negotiate in good faith incorporating the party’s values, and who are determined to whittle the bill down to less than a shit sandwich that, if passed, will piss off more people than it helps (sabotaging Dems slim chances in 2022), Schumer should include reduced/modified versions of the sections that Manchin has demanded be removed, including the CEPP.

Schumer and Pelosi should announce the framework for the bill tomorrow morning after their meeting with Biden before he leaves for Europe. They should announce the bill, which will include all elements of Biden’s agenda, in reduced form to accommodate Manchin’s concerns about the Top Line numbers, and each committee will report out next week with debate and floor vote scheduled for next week as well. Manchin can have all weekend to stew in his juices, even quit the party, but come Monday, he will be faced with voting no, over and over again, to deliberately kill the BBB bill, and the bipartisan bill with it.

I know this is unlikely to happen, but it would be the better way to mitigate the political fallout and ensure the blame is focused exactly where it belongs, on Manchin and Sinema if she joins him,

Instead, I fully expect we’ll get a press conference announcing how delicious this shit sandwich is, despite the fact that it has been stripped of the CEPP, community college, Medicare expansion, billionaire taxes, with only means tested (with an emphasis on mean) childcare and funding for the government to buy a fleet of EV’s remaining.

Fuck Joe Manchin.

How does this even make sense? Not a single Republican is supporting climate change. This is the time for young people to dig in their heels, elect more Democrats, neuter Manchin, and allow Democrats to pass an even stronger bill in 2023.

They have to play the long game if Manchin and/or Sinema torpedo this bill. And they do that by showing up in 2022 and electing more Democrats. There is no other path forward for them.

It’s not like the President and the Party aren’t working their tails off to get this.

$500 Billion for clean energy is in the bill. A ton of other things are too.

BBB will pass this week and it's a landmark piece of legislation that Dems can tout and run on.
