But correct me if I'm wrong, Abramson said the point of taking the Capitol was to occupy it for days to prevent certification so that states would send a different slate of electors. The crowd was chanting "Fight for Trump!" and probably would have continued to do so until a more forceful response made that impossible; maybe they could have occupied parts of the Capitol for X amount of time.

If Trump knew the jig was up and took the out, okay, end of story. But were there perhaps others in the White House who applied some leverage to get Trump to call off the dogs? Curiouser and curiouser, as Alice said.
