(54,027 posts)we teach a much more nuanced story now. The melting pot model was always flawed, but it was a useful mythology. It stated that nationality and race need to be left at door where the public sphere was concerned.
I think we over emphasize our differences these days. It makes dividing us easier. We should celebrate our diversity, of course. The melting pot can too easily be twitter into attacks on non conformity.v just think we should celebrate our differences together more, rather than in enclaves.
