Georgia's Fulton County Heading Back to Polls as Election Officials Face State Takeover

Georgia's Fulton County, the most populous county in the state, heads into Tuesday's elections not just looking to decide Atlanta's next mayor but also facing a possible state takeover over elections under the rules of a new law, the Associated Press reported.

The county faced scrutiny going into 2020's presidential election, especially after coronavirus infections affected the June primary due to poll workers who were sick or wishing to avoid getting COVID-19. New voting equipment only added to problems during the primary.

Former President Donald Trump then pushed unproven claims about election fraud after November's presidential election, saying fraud cost him victory in the state. GOP state lawmakers then pushed the Republican-controlled State Election Board to remove local election officials.

Democrats argued a new provision that requires a performance review was made with a focus on Fulton. Republicans then began a state review of the Democrat-controlled county election board that could result in the board being replaced with the state board's appointee.
