Across the country, local candidates are pitching themselves as advocates on safety and supporters of the police.https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/30/crime-mayors-races/
Mayoral candidates across the country are closing out their campaigns pledging to restore law and order, a major setback for racial justice protesters who only a year ago thought they had permanently reshaped the debate on policing in American cities.
As voters head to the polls Tuesday, local elections are dominated by discussions about safety and law enforcement amid a surge in violent crime. The tone of the debate, even in many liberal urban communities, highlights how major policing reforms have stalled.
From Buffalo to Seattle, Democratic politicians who once championed significant reductions or reallocations of police department budgets are backtracking. In other cities, including Cleveland, liberal candidates are being hammered over their stances on public safety.
And even in cities without a competitive mayors race, the question of how to get tough on crime and bolster public safety has emerged as a defining issue. In Miami Beach, for example, Mayor Dan Gelber (D) is campaigning for a controversial referendum that would ban the sale of alcohol at bars and nightclubs after 2 a.m., which the mayor says is needed to regain control of the city after a tumultuous year of unruly behavior and gun violence. Gelber is also exploring how Miami Beach can hire more police officers.

(10,381 posts)The big race is for City Attorney. One wants to defund the police and not prosecute misdemeanors. The other wants to crack down on crime.

(9,760 posts)like gibberish to me. But your link did clarify it.
Well, as if all the death isn't bad enough, the increased violence is bad for Dems. Unlike the violence on the right, which doesn't seem to hurt the Rs.
They can attempt a coup, worship a POTUS who never even read the Constitution and still call themselves patriots without every single other American laughing in their faces and pointing out the hypocrisy in all that.
I dread what this country is coming to.

Hyper-militarised, both in terms of staffing and equipment, orchestrated and defended by criminal crime syndicates falsely called police unions, all backed by an ecosphere undergirded with both racism/white nationalism and an absolute deference to the rich and powerful.
The political will to tear that corrupt, violent, deadly template down simply doesn't exist, and so the cycle of brutality is just going to keep repeating itself ad nauseam.

(11,938 posts)The shift in public opinion comes after the U.S. cities experienced a 30 percent jump in killings in 2020, the largest one-year increase since the federal government began compiling national figures in the 1960s."

(32,626 posts)I have no doubt that people are killing each other more, just by the number of guns in this country, and the deteriorating mental health of the citizenry. Cops just add to the violence. Being black in America you're more likely to be a statistic for murder by cop.

Georgia DA Demands Records on Man Shot 59 Times
The Atlanta-area district attorney claims in court that the Department of Justice has refused to hand over records about members of a federal task force who fatally shot a black student-athlete at least 59 times.

ATLANTA (CN) The Atlanta-area district attorney claims in court that the Department of Justice has refused to hand over records about members of a federal task force who fatally shot a black student-athlete at least 59 times.
Jamarion Robinson, a 26-year-old student and football player at Clark Atlanta University, was shot and killed by a team of local and federal officers who broke down the door to his girlfriend's apartment on Aug. 5, 2016, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in Atlanta federal court by the office of Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard.
"It has now been 875 days since the officers killed Mr. Robinson, and the DOJ has yet to provide any of the documents or evidence requested and has failed to provide any investigative reports relating to Mr. Robinson's death," the complaint states.
========================
Robinson was not charged with any federal crime and there was no federal arrest warrant pending for him, the lawsuit states.
Except for a traffic violation, Robinson's record was clean, the DA says.
==============
The medical examiner recorded over 59 entry wounds into Mr. Robinsons body. Without the documents requested, described herein, there is a question as to whether Mr. Robinsons killing was justified, the complaint states.

(2,728 posts)I have had to dispatch PD for self and others many times both professionally and unfortunately as a victim of crime. I dial 911 and call PD as my correct and ethical stance plus it has everything to do with living. Definitely can't keep that inaction bottled up. I'm all for you choosing what to do for yourself when experiencing crime. Most folks enjoy minimal effects of crime on their day-to-day, hence the shift to "law and order" by many mayoral campaigns referenced in the OP.
