Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Washington Post has published a long analysis of 1/6.
Not sure if they've put it behind their firewall but if you can get to it, it's a very interesting read.
The consequences of that day are still coming into focus, but what is already clear is that the insurrection was not a spontaneous act nor an isolated event. It was a battle in a broader war over the truth and over the future of American democracy.
Since then, the forces behind the attack remain potent and growing. Trump emerged emboldened, fortifying his hold on the Republican Party, sustaining his election-fraud lie and driving demands for more restrictive voting laws and investigations of the 2020 results, even though they have been repeatedly affirmed by ballot reviews and the courts. A deep distrust in the voting process has spread across the country, shaking the foundation on which the American experiment was built the shared belief that the nations leaders are freely and fairly elected.
One of the most disturbing things was the fact that intelligence agencies had been getting the same kind and amount of warnings about 1/6 as preceded 9/11 but nobody was prepared to do anything - or they were prevented from doing anything.

NEW YORK TIMES INSURRECTION VIDEO REPORT - June 30, 2021
This was posted when it came out in June, but it's worth posting again. Last I checked it's not behind a paywall. The video is 40 minutes & is a compilation of video collected from that day, from various sources, showing events in the chronology they unfolded. They include a map of the Capitol grounds with graphics of where the rioters were & where they breached the building. I was stunned to realize they breached almost every side of the Capitol. I noted some key events, below, including when Ashli Babbitt was shot. She was clearly warned not to proceed. It's so worth the 40 minutes to watch the entire video.
Day of Rage: An In-Depth Look at How a Mob Stormed the Capitol

8:55 - Map of the outside of the Capitol Building & where the rioters were gathering.
14:14 - Floor plan of inside of Capitol Building & then fans out to the entire grounds.
19:17 - Floor plan of Senate side of Capitol Building. Rioters have broken into the Capitol building by this point.
20:44 - Officer Goodman lures the rioters away from an unguarded door & into a line of fellow officers.
21:33 - Layout of the Rotunda & Crypt & House side of the Capitol Building.
22:22 - A copy of the tweet Trump sent out at 2:24pm as the Capitol Building was being stormed by angry MAGA.
22:50 - Rioters breach the other side of the Capitol Building & look for House chambers.
27:16 - Ashli Babbitt arrives at the place where she will be shot.
28:20 - Ashli Babbitt is shot trying to breach the House chamber.
29:49 - Map of outside Capitol Building & where the crowd is. Continues into stunning footage of how the police were overwhelmed, & calls for backup were ignored.
33:00 - "Law respecting" trumpers beating police as they storm the Capitol Building.
34:06 - Trumpers trample one of their own, after she collapses & her friend's cries for help are ignored.
34:55 - Map of the Capitol Building & an overview of all the places it was breached. If you don't watch any other part of this report, watch this. It shows the scope of the breach.

(42,770 posts)It is very well done but very disturbing. You feel dirty after you watch it.
I didn't realize until then that they had no video of what happened in the house once adjourned. That's the agreement that C-SPAN stops filming on adjournment. There is very little personal video and pics of that time in there.

and after a number of tries I think I have all the text. Well, except things like tweets, which for some reason dont like this process. Also, it is a multi-media effort and cant be captured in a static pdf.
This is humongously long, isnt it? Its hundreds and hundreds of pages. Itll take quite awhile to read and digest, and Im glad to be able to do that at my leisure without WaPo kvetching at me to subscribe. Im adding this post to my DU Journal, in hopes that your link will still work if I try to go back.

personally, i think the warnings, for 1/6 were purposely buried much like the ones from 9/11

(10,183 posts)Was an intricately, but poorly, planned war on our democracy. The oligarchs want a dictator to control and want to be rid of our weak democracy. That way there is not even a slight chance American citizens will interfere with the continued wealth extraction by the filthy rich. Then even more billionaires will be shot up into space using our tax dollars for a tourist promotion.
"It was a battle in a broader war over the truth and over the future of American democracy."
Since the oligarchy does not want to punish the traitors for doing what our filthy rich really wanted them to do. The war will continue on.
And make no mistake, it is a war on the US as defined by the Constitution. Trump and company are levying war against the United States and that is treason.
They tried to stop the certification and counting of electoral votes as prescribed by the US Constitution.
They should have upheld the Constitution as many of the plotters had taken an oath to protect the Constitution and they ignored it.
They planned to have the mob at Trump's speech and use the mob to prevent the certification of electoral votes. They actually were successful in delaying the certification.
The battle was almost won by the traitors. They were just too poorly organized to have completed that last step of capturing and killing some of the Congress men and women and capturing and hanging Pence. They were so close, Trump was gleeful.
This meets all the requirements for Treason by levying war against the United States.
Glad to see all these journalists documenting all these crimes because there is NO statute of limitations on Treason. Maybe someday someone will grow a spine and prosecute these traitors. Then all this evidence can be brought out again. It will hang over their heads for their lifetime.

Sobering.
That's the word to describe it.
This wasn't a bunch of yahoos.
This was a murderous mob, and several years in the making.
We are in a civil war.

(6,594 posts)At the Pentagon, leaders had acute fears about widespread violence, and some feared Trump could misuse the National Guard to remain in power, new accounts reveal.
Military officials took fateful steps to avoid being entangled in domestic unrest, scarred by the presidents efforts months earlier to use the military to quash racial justice protests. Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy sought to require that only senior Pentagon leaders could approve changes to missions for National Guard soldiers.
-snip-
McCarthy and Milley discussed the particulars. A letter would need to be sent, laying out clear guardrails for the 340 troops who would be deployed. And it should come with one special restriction, they decided: a requirement that any change to the soldiers orders come all the way back to the acting secretary of defense for explicit approval. McCarthy said he could sign the letter. Miller said, no, he would do it. Milley welcomed Millers direct engagement, telling others he thought it would slow the ability of Trump to redirect troops into the political fray, and put one of the presidents own on the line should Trump flex his power as commander in chief.
McCarthy followed Millers letter with his own, further putting the Guard in defensive mode. They would have no weapons, and in a verbal order, he added that Guard troops were to stay west of Ninth Street, essentially no closer than a mile to the Capitol. And in another unusual restriction, soldiers would carpool in vans to their traffic-control duties, leaving Humvees and other military vehicles at the armory.
-snip-
Me:
The DC Guard is subordinate only to POTUS. They were "Trump's Troops." He could have ordered them to take the Capitol & stop certification of the vote. A standoff could have gotten VERY ugly. As soon as I read the letter of 1/4 disarming them & taking Trump out of their chain of command it seemed obvious that Pentagon officials were concerned Trump might try to use the DC Guard in a coup attempt so they took that possibility away from him. According to this article, I was right.

(9,670 posts)It sent the wrong message to the public.
Here we are, months later, and people don't remember or care what happened in the summer, much less in early January.
The press never gave the story the coverage it merited.
In addition to the active players in this piece, let's add the mass media to the list as co-conspirators by omission.
