The rights of the individual do not outweigh the rights of many when it comes to public health.

(19,993 posts)That's just fine, Ronbo, as long as those children whose parents have refused to have them vaccinated NEVER LEAVE HOME where they may endanger the public.
It's unbelievable that the so-called "governor" of any U.S. state would not understand his/her duty to do everything within his/her power to protect and defend the public's health. "Serving the people" does not include needlessly endangering them with potentially fatal consequences.

(1,495 posts)The anti-vaxxers will love this as a lot of them don't want to vaccinate their kids for anything.

(26,080 posts)Which is bad enough, but this tweet saying all vax are not mandated is false. I live here, and what DeSantis does is bad enough without spreading incorrect info.

(34,075 posts)It seems clear to me that he is referring only to the COVID vaccine. He referenced (paraphrasing) "that's what was in the law that was passed recently."
Florida has not passed a new law recently - but there was a September threat to review the currently mandated vaccines, spearheaded by Republican Manny Diaz.
Diaz's most recent comment:
Diaz made it clear that he remains firmly opposed to mandates associated with COVID-19 vaccines: However, I will stand on the side of freedom and the state retaining its power to review any emergency vaccination use imposed by the federal government.

DeSantis is bad, but we need to be accurate about the specific ways he is bad or we lose the high ground in which alternative facts are just lies.

The OP needs to delete -- this is literally fake news.

(26,587 posts)against it since the early 70s. Hep B doesn't circulate widely or easily among school children, and HPV mostly manifests as cervical cancer in sexually active adult women.
They are very likely to see a resurgence in measles and chickenpox, and probably babies born affected by rubella. Probably increases in pertussis amongst babies and young children for whom it's a serious illness. Maybe see more cases of kids with tetanus, if Florida parents begin completely rejecting vaccination en masse.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes diphtheria and polio to make a comeback.
This likely won't stay confined to Florida, but may become the new big thing in multiple red states. Eventually the South will reemerge as a plague pit.
Anyone with kids would be well advised to avoid that region, as vaccinated kids are still vulnerable. If not enough people are vaccinated, you lose herd immunity, and will start seeing outbreaks that affect everyone.

(26,080 posts)It is false.
DeSantis meant Covid vaccines.

(118 posts)lies?
He's not banning vaccines. He banned mandating the Covid vaccine.
And FYI - the last regularly given smallpox vaccine in the US was 1972...and HPV is not a mandatory vaccine for school-aged children and I do not believe it is even required to attend a university.
