... that all of us here are frustrated by the fact that Donald Trump is still a free man.
To us, his guilt seems overwhelmingly obvious. To us, his aim to overthrow the 2020 election - and in the doing, overthrow our democracy - is beyond any doubt.
But what we need to remember is that "If you come at the king, you'd best not miss." And if you are going to prove that a sitting president waged war against his own country, you'd best make sure that that proof is irrefutable, that there isn't a fraction of an inch of wiggle room for him to squeeze his lard-ass through.
The case against Trump must be air-tight, and putting that case together takes time. You can't walk into a courtroom armed only with the idea that he looks guilty - you have to be armed with the evidence that he IS guilty.
There are tens of thousands of documents to be examined, timelines that must be established, phone/email/text communications that must be verified.
And let's not pretend that Trump supporters will not respond to his prosecution with violence - which makes it that more important that any charges against him must be irrefutable and provable. Anything less will only feed the already-frenzied into action.
Patience, my friends - patience. Building a precedent-setting case against a former president is not a slam-dunk situation. It requires the kind of research and due diligence never before demanded of the DOJ, and never before expected of the thousands of behind-the-scenes legal minds that endeavour to see that justice is done.
The wheels of justice may seem to move slowly - but that doesn't mean they AREN'T moving at all.

(27,815 posts)... you heard those investigating a crime publicly divulge what they'd uncovered thus far, and what they hope to uncover in future?
Not tipping your hand ahead of time is often part of the plan to only show your cards when you already know you've won.

(2,580 posts)It's maddening having to wait the process out. And, too often, we have seen the wealthy and connected get off without consequences. It is no surprise that we don't have faith that justice will be done. But, you are correct about how this process actually works. Thank you for your words of wisdom about keeping our eyes on the prize.

Thanks for your thoughts.

This Asshole
- incited a riot that has ties to an insurrection
- did little to nothing to stop the violence after it began
- supported moves to topple the election at the time
- set in motion multiple firings BEFORE the insurrection to slow the response
Those would, and other things Trump has done, be ... ENOUGH ... historically and under current law to put a non former president in jail ... do so with Trump quickly and multiple times.
This non-king can be gone after multiple time with multiple arrest and we should treat him like that less Franco Trump gathers the army everyone said he couldn't.
