That day, a woman (maybe her name was Karen) phoned 911 to complain that Joshua Rohrer was "using [his] dog to get money." That dog was Rohrer's service animal, which he acquired for the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he developed after completing a tour overseas in the U.S. Army.
----------------
Where there's a will, there's a way. An officer with the Gastonia Police Department arrived at the intersection, told Rohrer he was breaking the law, and asked to see his identification. Rohrer disputed that he'd done anything illegal. The officer then requested backup, apparently believing that calling all-hands-on-deck to stop a panhandler was a prudent use of law-enforcement resources. The cops insisted that Rohrer show them a state ID, which he didn't have; he carried only his Veterans' Affairs card. According to eyewitness accounts, he was arrested shortly thereafter.
----------------
An officer also tased his service dog, Sunshine, who ran off. Rohrer asked if they could retrieve her and bring her with him. "They laughed at me," he told Army Times. The dog has since died, having been hit by a car.
----------------
Constitutional questions aside, Rohrer's arrest and the death of his dog speak to the practical consequences of such statutes. People with a monopoly on force are charged with upholding all the laws. Sometimes that isn't worth it.

I hope the cops and useless woman involved are haunted and miserable for life.

(38,958 posts)I agree that all involved with this nonsense need to pay an exceptionally heavy price. That happening is rather unlikely, but they sure should do so.

(6,556 posts)Just saying that fact checking sources is a good habit to get into. Read the article, but keep in mind where that article originates.

(58,785 posts)elsewhere makes this situation at all okay, so are extra gut punches to elicit maximal outrage really needed?
At very least unreliable sources should be checked against others.
Just for instance, the Reason article hid that the police gave Sunshine into the care of a friend of Mr. Rohrer's choice; she went home with him and later got out of his house and was hit by a car. This detail would have weakened the impact of evil-establishment theme, even just a little, so it was kept from the narrative's targets (the readers).
But just omitting it wasn't enough for the Reason article. This further deceit was inserted in place of the truth so readers would be double-dog outraged:
See? Outrage is appropriate all right, including for Reason's predatory manipulation of its targeted victims.
Btw, we should always ask ourselves what political agenda these influence narratives are intended to serve. To me it's clearly intended to suppress turnout for Democrats, especially among anti-establishment and discouraged sorts. Trumpists may feel sad but are not going to be outraged against the government.

(10,185 posts)The libertarians, just like Republicans, hide their real intentions behind lies and manipulation. They have no problem with the state controling women's wombs but claim to want less government control. They also supported and voted for Trump.
Just don't read their propaganda and think you are getting the truth.

Police fascism is a massive scary issue in this country. We must deal with it.
What these cops did is straight up fascism. America is at risk.

(32,688 posts)I so wish I had that Law Degree in these times.
Let the police defund themselves. Take all Civil lawsuits payouts out of their paychecks. You'd see that Blue Line fade out of sight if it cost some of their own pay check for protecting bad cops. That along with no more Qualified Immunity, as it has been abused to protect bad cops.
sorry for the rant, but it's hard to take.

(31,173 posts)but you never know who or what you're dealing with. Racist, bigot, psychotic, sadist ... or you could catch a cop simply having a bad day. A cop can snap just like anybody else.

In all call-ins, any officer who uses force against a person should required to cite, in the arrest call-in, the law the arrestee is allegedly breaking, or the officer is immediately dismissed that day with loss of benefits. Police chiefs must be forced to stop wasting tax payer money as their "officers" wage war on civilians.

(58,785 posts)Or here from WCNC:
After Mr. Rohrers arrest, his dog Sunshine was turned over to the custody of Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement (GCACE). GCACE later released Sunshine to a friend of Mr. Rohrers choosing. That friend took Sunshine to a home in Cleveland County, North Carolina. According to posts made on social media by friends of Mr. Rohrer, Sunshine left the premises where she was being temporarily housed, entered a roadway, and was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.
The sadness and questonability of this entire event in no way excuses Reason's despicable attempt to jack up outrage by deceiving its readers.

Snips....
Rohrer was freed the next afternoon on $3,000 bail, according to the records. Friends posted his bail, according to a GoFundMe site that had raised $13,250 by Friday afternoon from 350 donors. The money will be used for Rohrers legal fees, housing costs and mental health treatment.

Gaston County Police later released a 911 call from a citizen who complained about a man using a dog to get money, WBTV reported. Rohrer denied the accusation during interviews with Charlotte-area news media. He told WBTV that he was merely walking at the intersection, smiling, waving and chatting with passers-by. I fought for my country, he told the station. I fought for everybodys freedom, and I feel like a freedom we should have is being able to walk where we please, as long as its not private property, no trespassing.
Two witnesses to the Oct. 13 encounter told WCNC that officers slammed him up against a patrol car and handcuffed Rohrer. The witnesses said an officer Tased Sunshine after she nipped the officers boot, according to the station.

(18,479 posts)The dog did not run off after being tasered and get hit by a car. She was sent the county animal care facility then to a person Mr Rohrer designated. This led to her escape and death due to a traffic accident.
I didn't take the time to research the politics of the source I sited. I know and respect the opinions of others here regarding using such sources. I'm sorry for the concern or offense. I don't see much material difference between the story at reason.com and a few others. I've seen this source elsewhere on DU.
My main objection is the misuse of authority and resources on the part of police.
I'm open to discussion and editing the OP but I'm working today and my time is limited. Please reply here or DUMail.
