Among Texas voters who went to the polls in 2020, Abbott leads ORourke 44% to 43%, with the rest of respondents unsure or supporting third-party candidates.
Among all registered voters, the results are almost the same: Abbott, 43%; ORourke, 42%; undecided, 12%; and minor-party candidates, 3%.

The race is virtually unchanged if actor Matthew McConaughey, who has teased that he might run, appears on the ballot as an independent, the poll found. Among all registered voters, McConaughey draws only 9%, to Abbotts 40% and ORourkes 37%, with the rest unsure or backing minor-party candidates.
Contributing to ORourkes surprising strength in the poll was his 49%-31% lead among Hispanics, anchored in a 27-percentage point lead among Catholic Hispanics.

(8,300 posts)1. Last time a poll had o Rourke that close, it was on election day
...and he started like 20 points or so behind. He has a good shot at this if he can repeat his performance from last time.

I am not sure how accurate that is in TX. And it was not done by a recognized national polling firm.

He famously said something like, "hell yes we're going to take your AR-15." To me, that's a point in his favor, but I wonder how it plays in Texas.

When he said it in 2019, it was met with a round of applause from the audience in Texas (along with me, also in Texas).
That said, he's made no substantive mention of it in the past two years, and there's no current indication it will be a plank he runs on if he does run.
Hope that helps!
