House Democrats brush off Manchin

Democratic negotiators in the House say they're on the brink of sealing a deal on President Biden's economic agenda despite Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) tossing a verbal hand grenade into the talks on Monday.

Democrats brushed aside concerns voiced by Manchin at a must-watch press conference that the $1.75 trillion package might exacerbate inflation, insisting the measure would improve the economy.

"We intend to pass both bills through the House in the next couple of days," Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, told CNN Monday not long after Manchin's press conference.

"I believe that the president is speaking out of the experience that he has had of negotiating ... with these senators," she said. "So I trust the president; he's going to deliver 51 votes. And I think we just need to bring all the temperature down a little bit."

...and I'm usually against progressives that "hold the line" in negotiations such as these, but I honestly don't really trust Manchin or Sinema to vote with the rest of us Democrats once they get their infrastructure bill passed. I don't see any problem in holding up the infrastructure bill until the Senate passes whatever version of the Build Back Better reconciliation deal. If they want the infrastructure deal passed faster in the House, then Senate Democrats and Manchin/Sinema should get to work on writing up and passing the reconciliation bill. It's just that simple.

Having said that, while I do not trust Manchin or Sinema or trust them to do the right thing, I do trust Biden, so, I'm hoping that he will be able to win them over without having the cut anything else from the supposed agreed-to framework.

No vote in the House on this 'bi-partisan' nonesense till the real Democratic bill is passed in both chambers.

For weeks they refused to vote on BIF until he committed to a particular version of BBB and (on multiple occasions) refused to hold a vote even when the President and The Speaker insisted on it.

Then mere minutes after Manchin makes his position painfully clear that their strategy will not work - they change course and agree to hold the vote without any commitment from him…

… and that’s them brushing him off?

The act of writing, voting and passing laws with no suitable partner in the upper Chamber or White House.
