66 former Democrat and Republican lawmakers oppose TFG's attempt to block Jan. 6 records
WASHINGTON As former President Donald Trump tries to block a House panel from access to his administrations records, scores of former lawmakers urged a federal court not to side with Trump.
The 66 former lawmakers said the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol made the Watergate burglary look quaint in comparison. The lawmakers said it is urgent for the House committee investigating the riot to learn what happened and what role Trump played to enact legislative safeguards before the next election.
The risks associated with denying Congress this access far outweigh any insult to the personal interests Mr. Trump may have in these records or any harm to the interests of the Office of the President that the former President gleans but the current holder of the office, chosen by the American people over Mr. Trump, disavows, said the 32-page legal filing the former lawmakers filed Friday.
The House committee investigating what led to the Jan. 6 attack subpoenaed documents and testimony from top Trump aides and the National Archives.
