This story just broke my heart.

Could Elon Musk’s money help this little girl? I don’t pretend to know the answer, but I just can’t believe we live in the 21st century and this still happens.


(CNN) - Parwana Malik, a 9-year-old girl with dark eyes and rosy cheeks, giggles with her friends as they play jump rope in a dusty clearing.

But Parwana's laughter disappears as she returns home, a small hut with dirt walls, where she's reminded of her fate: she's being sold to a stranger as a child bride.

The man who wants to buy Parwana says he's 55, but to her, he's "an old man" with white eyebrows and a thick white beard, she told CNN on October 22. She worries he will beat her and force her to work in his house.

1. Yes it still happens all over the world .. ..

not just in Afghanistan. Also, girls that start their monthly cycles in some cultures are ready for marriage. Also if a girl or women don't comply with certain cultures and or speak out can be murdered, and I still believe China still continues to kill baby girls.

2. I read this last nite and it kept me awake all night

In the west, we have the money to support these girls. We just don't have reliable organizations on the ground to get to the parents before the girls are sold.

I'd like to see some sort of NGO able to just outright support the girls' families, provided that they are in school and unmarried until an appropriate age. Unlikely under Taliban rule, but my heart aches for these girls.

I watched this before bed and then woke up several times thinking about that little girl. I know she’s one of many, but it starts with just one.

Like you, I wish there was a legitimate organization that I could trust and donate towards. I don’t have much to give, but I’d give what I could.

5. the education is highly uneven

After sunset, the ratio of men to women rises dramatically in the non-cosmopolitan streets.

I make sure to carry some small
bills in case i meet some poor women. They wear black. 4 recognize me by face.

Schools are tough. The senior high schools are a bit more challenging than my first year college chemistry courses.
