Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy held off a tough challenge from Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli to win a second term and give Democrats a hard-fought victory after the pain of losing in Virginia.
The Associated Press projected Murphy as the winner Wednesday afternoon after the results seesawed back and forth in what is seen as a reliably blue state that picked Joe Biden over President Donald Trump by 16 percentage points.
For most of the campaign, Murphy held a commanding lead, but the governors edge slipped to single digits in the days leading up to the election, leaving the outcome less certain.
Were leading with compassion and empathy, not anger and despair. Were following science and facts, not the political winds, Murphy told supporters in a speech after midnight. So were all sorry that tonight could not yet be the celebration we wanted it to be. But as I said, when every vote is counted and every vote will be counted, we hope to have a celebration again.

(56 posts)Not that close? The Repub was less than a percentage point from winning. Pres Biden won NJ by over 16 percentage points. This was extremely close.
