When you give Amazon gift cards as a present,

When you give Amazon gift cards as a present, you should peel off the protective coating that covers the numbers. You should scan them or take a picture or write down the numbers. Tonight I found $240 worth of gift cards that I have given as presents but have not been redeemed. Some over 2 years old. Unredeemed gift cards are pure profit for the company.

No wonder Jeff Bezos is a multi-gazillionaire.

Same/same for all other gift cards.

Companies love to sell them.

They can even sell them at a discount, knowing some will be lost or forgotten.

Even redeemed, you are a captive customer.

I think a gift card should be redeemed in a timely fashion and then a thank you card sent, mentioning what was bought......but then I am old school.

How is it different than giving cash? Yeah, I'm old fashioned in that respect.

Single male. Christmas Eve. 7-11. Shopping for friends & family.

Gimme a double pack of D cell batteries. Two of those lighters. A magic marker.
Two six packs of beer (one for me). A souvenir mug. Scotch tape.

And a separate bag for each item (wrapping).

Get spent. It may be for something that the recipient wants or needs but it could be dribbled away. But it doesn't normally go into a drawer and forgotten. Which gives the card company money for nothing.

Instead of giving them something they don't need they can actually use the gift card. Gas cards, grocery cards, movie cards, etc are useful when you're young and just starting out.

I also gave my youngest niece a movie gift card when she was 5. I put enough money on it for her to buy a ticket for herself and her parents along with snacks at the movies. I knew which movie she wanted to see so I sent the card in a note, telling her to enjoy it. My brother said she was so proud to give them the card at the movies and pay for everyone.

My daughter sends me cards as presents and I save them to buy her something.

Then I forget to buy something and it’s sitting on my desk unredeemed. I’m gonna spend it today, I deserve it for being so conscientious.

Fathers Day wasn’t that long ago, was it?😅

tell them what to do with it. Some are spenders and some are savers. Like the rest of us.
Christmas is a different story, when I send gifts for the most part.

And arrange a gift card from one of them.

Not to rip on Amazon, but if it's easy to buy local, it helps to try.

For him it's easier to just go through Amazon or give a Visa gift card.

whatever occasion. It's easy for them, and I don't mind. However, I have never let one slip by more than a day or two. I use any gift card money to buy things I need, like clothing, shoes, and other stuff like that. Any Amazon cards get added to my account immediately, and generally get spent almost as quickly.

My closet would be empty without them, since I detest shopping for clothing.

10. People should just give money . That's what I will do now

I know the cards feels like there is more to it and that cash feels like there is less thought in it but cash is much more convenient and useful to people. Just think of yourself opening a card and how you would feel seeing cash v gift card. I would much prefer the cash .

Give money and a small gift with it. Like some chocolates or lotion or something.

She had a wallet full of gift cards.
Almost half of the ones she had had entered bankruptcy during the pandemic and hundreds of dollars just wasted.
Due to this, I will never purchase anyone a gift card.

I pat for the Amazon card and send them a link to the code. Once they click the link it goes directly to their account. With the nephew overseas it's just easier to send an electronic gift card so I don't pay expensive shipping costs and don't worry about it arriving late.
