Today we hit 750,000 Americans lost to COVID19. Were on trajectory to hit 800,0000 by years end. Those last 100,000+ maybe even 200,000 died unnecessarily because vaccines were widely available. They chose not to get vaccinated, sometimes even defiant. They died by antiscience
Abstract
Anti-science kills: From Soviet embrace of pseudoscience to accelerated attacks on US biomedicine

The United States witnessed an unprecedented politicization of biomedical science starting in 2015 that has exploded into a complex, multimodal anti-science empire operating through mass media, political elections, legislation, and even health systems. Anti-science activities now pervade the daily lives of many Americans, and threaten to infect other parts of the world. We can attribute the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans from COVID-19, measles, and other vaccine-preventable diseases to anti-science. The acceleration of anti-science activities demands not only new responses and approaches but also international coordination. Vaccines and other biomedical advances will not be sufficient to halt COVID-19 or future potentially catastrophic illnesses, unless we simultaneously counter anti-science aggression.

(113,341 posts)much my only outings are to the grocery store, where all staff, and about 70% of patrons are masked. No movies, no events, no crowds. My cat loves it.

(8,835 posts)is currently at a level that has never been reached before, I think.
Yesterday, Colorado had to enact the top level of triage where they can transfer patients to other hospitals without the approval of the patient or their families........In Colorado, we are currently at the highest level of hospitalizations in the entire history of the Covid Pandemic.......and the rate is still climbing by the day.......
When I go out shopping, there are precious few others who are masked............The employees/checkers are masked, but only a small percentage of the patrons.........

(19,201 posts)He hasn't gotten control of the pandemic, and that was one of his campaign promises.
So republicans didn't get vaccinated, won't wear masks, take horse de-wormer when they do get COVID and their plan is working perfectly!
Biden's poll numbers are way down, the supply chain is in the weeds, and people are pissed off. Great plan, GQP! If you spent the same amount of time and energy trying to help Americans , maybe you'd be a functional political party again, instead of a bunch of rat-fucking college frat boys. Just a thought.

(30,613 posts)I would say that 90% of American deaths are the direct and intended result of the anti-science campaign.

(86,646 posts)According to this source, Montana has seen more than a 5th of the state population has contracted the virus and 1 of every 417 individuals in the state have died from it as of yesterday.
Our case numbers have been spiking, all hospitals are overwhelmed and the governor (the body slammer) is ignoring pleas for help from the medical entities in the state. He and the R dominated legislature passed bills this year taking all power from the medical authorities which impeded the slowing of the virus. As it is, the gov decided to destroy all protective measures his predecessor put into place just to own the libs.
We have a major problem in this country and if it isn't addressed pretty soon, kiss it all goodbye.

(2,809 posts)"Death Race 2000" was supposed to be twisted fiction along with Orwell. Murdoch runs a truly evil empire of televised demons who've sold their souls and taking lots of so called Christians to hades with them.
I shudder to imagine what nutzoid shit they'll create next. At this point I don't know which figure is more cringeworthy: Fucker Carlson with that grinning chuckle as he makes bank murdering his own flock or the screeching tones of Jenine Pirro's insane rants.
I'm guessing it's like the metaphorical car crash scene, gory, destructive, sickening but the hate addicts can't quit leering at it.
I've been the one in several ICU rooms to finally silence the annoying Fixed News nonsense at their bitter end, a disturbingly profound image of a filthy red MAGA hat in one of those losses laying on the bedside table still gives me nightmares.
Martyrs for utter nonsense.

(10,832 posts)As bad as Covid has been, as bad as the outbreak's impact, we need to be prepared for other viral pandemics, some of which could have far greater mortality rates.
Don't know what it's going to take--bodies piled in the streets? This was a test run and we failed bc of the basic ignorance and defiance gripping a large swath of the American public. That same ignorance was amplified by the GOP and their right-wing social outlets. Deliberately.
We are on a very slippery slope.

There's only one excusable kind of ignorance -- one that is open to learning.
Then there are variations of inexcusable ignorance -- passively or actively willful ignorance -- that routinely adopt others' opinions or media stories over fact-based truth.
Inexcusable ignorance is the basis of stupidity. Along with that, bad judgment, misperception and denial of information are stupidity's major features.
