A Texas real estate agent who swore she wouldnt be jailed over her role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot has been sentenced to 60 days in prison.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper on Thursday also slapped convicted rioter Jenna Ryan with $500 in restitution after she was charged with a single count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.
At the hearing, Cooper told Ryan that he believed her punishment would tell Americans something about the courts and about how our country responded to what happened, and I think the sentence should tell them that we take it seriously.
You suggested antifa was somehow involved. And perhaps most famously, you said that because you had blonde hair and white skin, you wouldnt be going to jail, Cooper said.
According to a sentencing memo that chronicled her appearance at the Capitol and her boastful commentary in the aftermath of the attack, Ryan in March had declared on Twitter that she would not face consequences for the insurrectionbecause shes white.
Definitely not going to jail. Sorry I have blonde hair white skin a great job a great future and Im not going to jail, she wrote. Sorry to rain on your hater parade. I did nothing wrong.

(11,738 posts)As others have said, she is a licensed Real Estate Agent. Not being in the Real Estate field, I don't know if there is an ethics association or if conviction of a crime would necessitate losing your license. Since this is not anything associated with fraudulent activity against customers, I don't think that she will lose any credentials.
I would hope that she would lose any credibility for her part in the insurrection, but right wingers love to play the victim and I am sure that she will garner some sympathy.
Glad the judge had the sense to acknowledge her flippant attitude and likely hit her with the hardest justifiable sentence for her part.

(33,956 posts)Which Crimes Are Most Likely to Disqualify You?
The crimes that matter most to TREC are those that directly relate to the duties and responsibilities of a license holder, and those that show that the person is probably not able to represent the interest of someone else with the required honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity.
These offenses involve:
felonies involving driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI)
felonies involving the manufacture, delivery, or intent to deliver controlled substances
fraud or misrepresentation
forgery, falsification of records, or perjury
offering, paying, or taking bribes, kickbacks, or other illegal compensation
offenses against real or personal property belonging to another, against a person, or
against public administration

(3,395 posts)She has been making fun of the insurrection of which she was part of, she has been singing her white privilege and predicting that because of it she would not go to jail...with 60 days she kind of was right, her white privilege won her a short sentence.
I just hope she is greeted accordingly by the other inmates who do not enjoy the same white privilege she enjoys and boasts about it.

(42,862 posts)Competent prosecutors are going to make plea deals where appropriate (or where the evidence isn't strong enough for a jury trial) and they're going to pursue the ones where there's enough evidence to get a plea deal. If the case is stronger, then there will be trial.
Honestly, while everyone is fixated on these low-level rioters, there's another story elsewhere on DU that talks about the DOJ and 1/6 committee following this trail much higher up into the government. Those are the ones that I want to see hanged in the public square.
I do understand the emotional need for "revenge" or extrajudicial punishment... but it just makes no sense to demand it and to act as though our judges and prosecutors aren't doing their job.

(16,743 posts)(1/6) may be the biggest "event" in our lifetime and I hate to see those who organized and participated, with intent to overthrow our government get a "slap on the wrist." (24,229 posts)After federal prison, an inmate is either sent to a federal half-way house, or placed directly on Supervised Release (Federal Probation is reserved for those who never received a prison sentence). An inmate, while in the halfway house, is still under the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons and can therefore be subject to release or relief in the same way they were while incarcerated (see Incarceration). Anything from home-confinement to early release is possible from a half-way house.
Post-Release, and Supervised Release
After full release from the BOP into the hands of the local United States Probation Office, a former federal inmate has potential years of probation 1 to deal with. Supervised release comes with a host of general and specific rules that must be followed, or the supervisee faces more prison time.
When on federal probation or supervised release (after federal prison time is served), the specific rules applied to each individual are unique. Most of the time these rules are lengthy and confusing so violations can occur accidentally by the probationer.

(12,618 posts)Sorry Judge, but this pathetic sentence does absolutely nothing to convince me that these terrorists aren't coddled by our so-called justice system. She deserves a minimum of ten years, as do all of these fascist thugs.
I personally know people who have done more than 60 days for non-violent offenses or just while awaiting trial for non-violent offenses simply because they couldn't afford bail. 60 days for violently attempting to overthrow the U.S. government is pathetic.
I am glad she will at least do some time, but come on, we the people who's democracy and right to vote these assholes tried to violently steal from us, deserve better.

(13,871 posts)I knew a guy whose uncle was a major asshole, loved guns and hated minorities.
One night he got into a argument with his son-in-law and pulled out a gun while ordering him out of his house. The cops were called and they were required to make an arrest any time they investigated a legitimate case of domestic violence, and since he had the gun he was the one who went to jail for the night.
While no charges were eventually lodged against him, the experience he had that night changed his outlook. He said that some of the poor Hispanic and AA men in his cell were very nice and supportive of him, and he was surprised at some of the minor charges and actions that had caused them to be locked up. His family agreed that his racism and habit of blaming "those people" for everything that was wrong in society decreased significantly after that incident.
Hope she has the same type of education; sounds like she really needs it.

Love this post!
Just saw the realtor on tv and she is yapping about posting on Twitter. It appears she doesn't even understand what she was sent to prison for.
For those of you who are disappointed in the 60 days, I agree with you; consider this, however. I know from my nonprofit work with the criminal justice system that the worst part of the sentence is the first few months. It is a cultural shock beyond what many of us can even understand. The worst part of a sentence is thinking about how you're going to adjust to that 1 or 2-inch mattress, the no private television, can't text or call anyone, have to listen to all the noise. Not to mention the food.

(13,871 posts)Early in my career I was a City Manager and the jail (really just a short term holding facility) came under my justification. Even some of the people who were only there for one night made the same observations as you do. They said it was just knowing that they could not leave, that loss of basic freedom, that was the hardest thing to handle.

(44 posts)In 1954 4 armed members of a Puerto Rican freedom movement (aka a Puerto Rican Militia) visited the Gallery of the House of Representatives and opened fire on the Congressmen down on the floor as they were debating an immigration bill. No one died. 3 of the assailants got sentences of 75 years and the other one got 65 years. They were subsequently convicted of the crime of sedition and each got an additional 6 years and that was added on to their original sentence. They did their time at places with names like Alcatraz and Leavenworth. They did not get Club Fed.
So... to sum up the total sentences that our justice system meted out for these 4 non-white US citizens that invaded our capitol with malicious intent... they got a total of 314 years.
At the rate we are going, if this sentence is any indication... the total sentences that we will hand out to these white traitors is going to total out to about 115 years (assuming about 700 are found guilty). Granted , there are a lot of assumptions here and the actual and eventual sentences could grow somewhat. But, even if my numbers are off by 50% you can't escape seeing that being white gives you about a 498% advantage when dealing with the justice system even if the system finds you guilty.
