In the aftermath of the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, Red Notice star Dwayne Johnson has become the latest Hollywood power player to put the use of real firearms on film and TV sets on notice. Speaking with Variety at the premiere of his upcoming Netflix blockbuster action film, the actor and producer behind such firepower-heavy films as Skyscraper and Rampage vowed that rubber guns would be the rule going forward for all of the projects made under his Seven Bucks Productions banner.
"I cant speak for anyone else, but I can tell you, without an absence of clarity here, that any movie that we have moving forward with Seven Bucks Productions any movie, any television show, or anything we do or produce we won't use real guns at all," Johnson told Variety, referencing the fact that visual effects artists can replicate gunshots in post-production. "We're going to switch over to rubber guns, and we're going to take care of it in post. We're not going to worry about the dollars; we won't worry about what it costs."
Johnson also said that he was "heartbroken" by the chain of events that occurred on the Rust set, which culminated in the film's producer and star, Alec Baldwin, firing the shot that resulted in Hutchins's death. "We lost a life. My heart goes out to her family and everybody on set. I've known Alec, too, for a very long time."
"I love the movie business," the actor continued. "There are safety protocols and measures that we have always taken in the movie business and we take very seriously, and these sets are safe sets, and we're proud of that. But accidents do happen. And when something like this happens of this magnitude, [that is] this heartbreaking, I think the most prudent thing and the smartest thing to do is just pause for a second and really re-examine how you're going to move forward and how we're going to work together. Any movie we do that Seven Bucks does with any studio, the rule is we're not going to use real guns. That's it."

(27,813 posts)I wish there weren't so many violent movies.
I have seen three movies in (mostly empty) theatres since.the pandemic started and they seem to be catching up on previews, I always have to sit through about ten of them.
They are so violent, it's disturbing. I have to shut my eyes a good part of the time. And I used to love previews.

I don't care for violence as it's a gateway drug for new real live targets.

(15,943 posts)And getting to kill just makes it all the more fun. Video games became babysitters since parents aren't up to the task of raising thought provoking children. Instead parents don't care to engage with their offspring.

(47,131 posts)The gaming companies drum studies to show the opposite, but there has to be some effect.
Has anyone done a study to show how many mass killers are also gamers? Are there any who aren't?

(47,131 posts)But violent people are drawn to violent games.
I think the sentiment amongst the psych community has been the violent games desensitize
young people to violence and deaths.
Who would enforce the ban?

(12,449 posts)Basically take a real gun frame, grip, etc... and build in a CO2 powered actuator that propels the slide back and ejects empty brass.
The barrel can be blocked, the magazine can be modified to accept ONLY spent brass, not actual bullets and all you have to do it add sound and muzzle flash in the studio.
You'd even have some recoil from the CO2 actuator...
It's be a hell of a business startup. Movie Guns Inc...
