Another fact that McAuliffe didn't run on: Virginia has its largest surplus in history

Virginia, under the leadership of a Democratic Governor and a Democratic legislature, has a $2.6 billion SURPLUS. For deficit shy voters, that's a pretty impressive accomplishment and one that puts the lie to scary talk about fiscally irresponsible Democrats. But did McAuliffe mention it? No. Just like he didn't mention any of the other accomplishments of the past couple of years.

But a lot of states predicted budget shortfalls because of COVID.

Then tax revenues came in at or above levels projected pre-COVID.

And they got the bail-out funds from the Federal government to make them whole against all the revenue shortfalls that had been predicted.

The projections were wrong.

And the bail-outs billed as essential were in hindsight both unnecessary and still billed as even more essential than anybody could have dreamed.

$4.3 billion.

Some of the items in the appropriations:

$862 million to replenish the state’s unemployment trust fund, which has been depleted by the large number of claims filed during the pandemic (thus avoiding the need to raise taxes to do so).

More than $700 million for to expand broadband access to underserved communities and individuals.

Extension of the 12.5% Medicaid rate increase for providers of services to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

$411 million on clean-water projects, $353 million for small-business relief and $250 million for school ventilation systems

Finally, over $700 million kept in reserve to cover costs associated with pandemic relief going forward.

(Another $354 million is unappropriated with the plan that it would be used in the next biennial budget for mental health, small-business recovery and other programs ).

The legislation also included provisions that protect families impacted by the pandemic against evictions and utility disconnections, to require the re-opening of DMV walk-in service, direct the establishment of regulations to allow student athletes to receive compensation from outside parties for use of their name and likeness in sponsorships and ads.

I wouldn't expect you to know that this is how the funding is being spent -- after all McAuliffe never mentioned the good things the Democrats in Richmond have been doing the past two years -- a mistake of unimaginable proportions by his campaign.

They were racist. They lost because they were called out on their racism. McAuliffe could and should have come out of the gate swinging, characterizing Youngkin as a clone of Stewart and Cucinelli who, like those guys, wanted to use race to divide people. But McAuliffe decided to run against Trump. And to ignore the great record compiled by Democrats in Virginia over the past two years.

Some are blaming Biden because he’s been slow in passing bills, but I disagree - governors races are more about what is happening locally. A person who has a book out there with passages like this is not a good candidate. I doubt his wife Dorothy ever forgot this incident. I think because Terry was such a good fundraiser for the DNC - people went along with his running.

9 Passages From Terry McAuliffe's Book That Might Make Virginia Voters Cringe

4. Leaving his wife in tears in the car with his newborn baby while he went to a fundraiser.

"Dorothy was starting to well up in the backseat. She was having trouble understanding how I could be taking my wife and newborn baby to a fund-raiser on our way home from the hospital. We got to the dinner and by then Dorothy was in tears, and I left her with Justin and went inside. Little Peter was sleeping peacefully and Dorothy just sat there and poor Justin didn't say a word. He was mortified. I was inside maybe fifteen minutes, said a few nice things about Marty, and hurried back out to the car. I felt bad for Dorothy, but it was a million bucks for the Democratic Party and by the time we got home and the kids had their new little brother in their arms, Dorothy was all smiles and we were one big happy family again. Nobody ever said life with me was easy." https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/andrewkaczynski/lines-from-terry-mcauliffes-book-that-will-make-virginia-v
