A MAGA rioter has reportedly told the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol that they had contacts ahead of the riot with "state-level GOP officials who worked with former President Donald Trump as he attempted to overturn the 2020 election."
According to Politico, the rioter has interviewed with the committee twice within the last week and "described knowledge of contacts between GOP officials in a key state Trump lost and allies of the former president in the weeks leading up to the Jan. 6 attack."
The rioter is scheduled to talk with the committee again in the coming days and Politico's sources say they have already been asked questions that "ranged from the defendant's knowledge of those who organized travel to Washington for the Jan. 6 event as well as details about the preparation of legal affidavits in support of Trump's false claims of voter fraud."
The Capitol riot committee so far has interviewed more than 150 people in its efforts to uncover the full picture about what led up to the deadly events on January 6th.

The Dept. of Justice, the Attorney General, the FBI and the other law enforcement agencies are supposed to remain independent from the purview of politicians including the President. This is how our system is supposed to work.
Joe Biden knows this, and so did every previous POTUS, except one.

(42,862 posts)... that people have, but I don't fully comprehend why so many people believe it's okay to engage in extrajudicial "revenge" and handing out sentences that are beyond the norm of what they're being charged with. It's just not realistic to expect that every one of the stupid people like Elizabeth from Knoxville are going to get life imprisonment or the death penalty.

(90,347 posts)... GQP and their violence against America and voting as a threat to democracy either.
I do, they're more of a threat against democracy than AQ ever could have been ... they're IN the house and walk among us.
Historically we should come down hard on those who tried this, make it public and quick ... Spain circa lat 1930s comes to mind if we don't.
It's just not realistic to expect that every one of the stupid people like Elizabeth from Knoxville are going to get life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Or how just sentence them accordingly ?! Yeah, if these people were Muslin I really doubt if the US DoJ under any admin would be having judges questioning soft charges.

Then incited a crowd of dumbasses to attack the nations capital complex when he saw he couldn't?
Then did little to nothing to stop the stupidity ?!

What Trump did on J6 is clearer than what you're trying to communicate no doubt

(42,862 posts)... based on the evidence and based on what they think will hold up in court. It's ridiculous to suggest that they endorse what happened on January 6th. That's just silly. When people say things like that, it just makes it more difficult to take seriously anything else they say.

(2,692 posts)A little bit of both, I think. Their reaction is to hide their worry and yell louder and lie more absurdly.
Elise Stefanik appears to be newly converted to the fascist side. Its horrible to see how shallow are the principles of these people and Stefanik stands out to me because she was, not long ago, a less unreasonable Republican than she appears today. its as if the move of the GOP to the extremist regions of the right -- by which I mean fascism -- was just too compelling for her to deny. Maybe rather than being disturbing to her, the shift was a dream come true.
(I have long resisted using the term fascist to describe the new Republican Party. But events starting with Trumps lies following his righteous, kick-ass defeat by Biden, and then the insurrection of January 6th -- and, especially, the eagerness of virtually every Republican to back the lie and publicly discount the insurrection as, in the memorable words of Representative Clyde, the vapid, cowardly liar from the State of Georgia, a normal day with normal tourists respectfully promenading around and through the Capitol Building -- Ive decided there is no more appropriate word for the Party and its devotees.)

(6,811 posts)Trump and the Republican State Attorney's General Association. The org was busy fighting and filing lawsuits against Secretary's of State in every place that TFG wanted to tamper with the elections. It pissed me off that the Indiana Attorney General was filing onto lawsuits in places like Arizona and Georgia. That's outsiders with no standing tampering with an election result in another state. Across state lines! That pissed me off to no end. It was criminal.
