What happens if the leaders get to the point where the think there is nothing to lose? Putin and friends enjoying the good life, while not good for the Russian people, was probably good for national security because they wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize their wealth. But if that starts to fall apart, all bets are off.

How much influence does China have in Russia?

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is the outward name of the Sino-Russian alliance. Beijing is the driver of that alliance.

Putin is Xi’s attack dog. If Putin does it, that means Xi approves of it.

If Russia does not cow-tow to China, they run a strong risk of Chinese occupation of Siberia.

And they don't want to admit their own Mafia based domestic policies are killing their potential to have a stable economy for everyone in Russia. The United States makes a great villain for a Nationalist fairy tale to lull a general population into accepting a failing political system and economy.

The only reason Putin is still in power is the co-opting of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian National media ownership by several of his buddies whose outrageous corrupt wealth and remaining out of jail is dependent on Putin's survival.

Once he goes, Russia falls into chaos, no matter who he has picked as his successor. Watch who the GRU will seem to support.
